« on: May 24, 2011, 06:44:30 PM »
I was thinking about how much fun a 460 would be in a handi...are they strong enough and has anyone built it yet?

There are a few here that have 460s, myself included, mine pushes 200gr factory ammo nearly 2900fps, I've only shot that ammo and 250gr SST handloads, neither were all that accurate, but Gendoc has done a lot of work with his. Most members opt for the Casull tho, see the reamer sticky if you're interested in doing your own Casull rechamber.

If they make one I WILL BUY IT! The short little .45 colt offering is an outstanding little carbine for my younger son, and nephews, and even though the NEF's arent as pretty as say the #1's and such, as hunting guns they are tough to beat. With the other high intensity cartridges that these guns are chambered for, I think the action should be able to handle the pressures. Maybe NEF doesent know if the market would but enough to make it worthwhile for the tooling etc. Perhaps if enough of us write a letter they will see that there is enough interest after all.

If I did a 460 rechamber wouldn't I be able to shoot 45LC, and 454 Casull in the rifle also?

How long is the 460 cartridge? Would the chamber accomadate a 2.5 inch 410 shell?

Yes, and 45 Schofield also.

If you dont  have any 460 brass to test fit in the chamber, do a wax (or Cerrosafe) cast of the chamber. You might find it will already take it.

Some have cut Casull brass down for their 45 Colt chambers, but none have worked unmodified that I recollect. Neither of mine would chamber Casull brass, let alone 460.

I understand as much as anyone wanting a certain caliber for that caliber... meaning even tho other do exactly the same thing, you simply want what you want...

But When I decided to go 454 I ruled out 460 because of a couple things... at the time rarity of brass, cost of brass and loaded ammo and the simple fact that it doesn't do a thing that my 45-70's haven't been doing since I can remember....

My .45LC carbine is staying just that way.  I've got .45-70, .445 amd .500 Handis.  I really don't see a need for another big bore expensive reload.

That sure seems like it would be a long jump to the rifling from 45LC to 460, and reaming from 45LC to 454 Casull doesn't seem to hurt accuracy, and in fact in mine it improved the 45LC, so I would be hesitant that I might ruin it by going to 460.

I feel the same as CW when it comes to easy to get brass, and less expense, then you throw in the time tested fact that the 45-70 is probably the most versatile of the big bores, it's pretty much a no brainer, unless you just have to have a 460 just to say you do.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.
