h&r barrels, fitted and back home.
« on: May 18, 2011, 08:21:35 AM »
just got my receiver back from h&r , fitted with two barrels, 7.62x39 and 243 fluted. Fit is good when the forend is on, otherwise has side to side slight movement, both barrels came to 306.06 inc tax, fitting and shipping. just thought youd like to know.

A note on this, I did forget to send a butt stock so they installed a cracked and scratched ugly yellowy one and shipped it back with it still on. First barrel 243 was charged out at 137.00 which i think also included the buttstock. second barrel 7.62 was 85.00, 25.00 for each fitting, and 19.00 for shipping. tax was 15.06

Thanks, good info.

I don't know about that side to side movement though ???

I wanted to send one in without stock also but maybe should send it with?

Maybe get a free stock though, I'll request one, minus cracks and scratches ;D

I dont think it was free, they do say you must send a stock on the receiver but I read that after I sent them it. Not wise. Thats why the nuns always beat me.

I'm kind of thinking if they were going to charge me for a buttstock, to at least charge me for one that wasn't cracked and scratched, and also that side to side movement wouldn't be acceptable!

How they get away with what they do, I'll never figure it out, and $300+ is still enough money where you should get more than a beater stock, and a wobbly barrel, but that's just me.

So I guess paying $125-135 for a used one is not that far out of line....plus you might accidentally get one that locks up better than the factory fitted ones do....or one that doesn't lock up at all....come to think of it, the replacement they fitted me with in the 7mm-08 also had lateral movement without the forearm, but none with it on..

Thanks for the info, I'm about to do the same thing.
I did send mine with an old stock/forearm set though.
I was kind of afraid to send a nice one for fear of it getting banged up in transit.

I took a nice set of cinnamon lams off and put and old beat-up set on my 7mm-08 and it came back more beat-up and with some sort of adhesive residue all over it...I think they must proof test them in a mechanical bench vise of some sort and wrap with duct tape or something.....

Too bad they don't sell you a barrel and let you fit it yourself.   Maybe fill out a disclaimer or something, but I can understand why they wouldn't.

I trust myself to fit my own and probably will never buy a new barrel although I do believe in never say never.

I know the forearm can mask a lot of movement, and even a small shim on the spacer will tighten up most all the slop.  I had an old 20 gauge that I did that to and she would close like a bank vault.   I Just wouldn't do it with a rifle barrel.

just got my receiver back from h&r , fitted with two barrels, 7.62x39 and 243 fluted. Fit is good when the forend is on, otherwise has side to side slight movement

If a barrel is loose on the frame in any way after the action has been closed firmly, it needs to go back for a new barrel. But be aware a newly fitted barrel will need to be closed very firmly to lock up well, more so than after it's been used for a while, the latch and shelf need some time "marrying" to each other.  ;)

Good for you!

I think the reason they do it, and what seems to be pretty often, is they think they can get away with "good enough" just because a lot of folks don't know any better and just take it for granted that since it's factory fit so it's right.

Sounds like they need to be held to higher standard. They used to be really good cheap rifles. Theyre not that cheap anymore, and it sounds like theyre not that good either. My customers dont settle for good enough, and I did Id be out of buisness. Its a shame HR doesnt hold itself to a higher standard.

I hope its not because they have replaced "H&R" people with other people who might not have the pride for the product or the expertise.  I hope they realize that even though it is a low cost product, quality is still the goal.  I would hate to see H&R go the way of the dinosaur for somthing like low quality.

Makes me glad I have the ones I want.... Sure seems like they are not producing a very good quality.....

A little wobble is like a Rossi. If the barrels  shoot good then it was a deal. If not then you would have been better off buying a bolt. Ya know they will be out of buisness if they don't get their act together. Good used  bolts are all over and there is a glut of guns out there.  Just cause it's  a simple low cost firearm, doesn't mean it has to  be junk. It's a shame. I would buy nothing but Handis if they would up their machining. It  would put a world of hurt on the Encores too. I bet they could double their quality for 50 bucks a gun more. They could then sell barrels for more than 96 bucks because we could put them on like Encores and not need fitting, and still be half the price of an Encore.

Im on my 4th send back of a 243 fluted I had fitted to one of my receivers in one year. They have had the gun more then me and they have had it for 5 weeks already and a call to them yesterday and they said they have yet to look at it as they are busy. should have asked them to keep the gun at this point and give me a refund.

We just got back a reciever and new barrel last week, it took about 5 weeks and it has the light contour 7-08 barrel. After reading this post I took the forend off and checked it and it is tight and good. So not to take away from your post at all, but ours is very tight and good to go. I just didn't want every one to think they are cranking out junk..... Some may have an issue but if all of us post who are happy I bet this would get to be a very long thread.
I will fill out my customer feed back card with a positive comment or two.

Its is probobly correct that the good outways the negatives when it comes to the service that is received. I have also had some great service from the company on other occassions as I once bought a gun with a stock that had some blemishes. One phone call and no questions asked they sent me a new one. The problem is in this situation at what point is the repairs being performed not the answer. I know there is another form for this but I just hope that the 4th time is a charm and they can make it right. No more sending it back. send it back fixed.

Yep, send it back fixed. If they did they wouldn't be so busy. I'm still temped to take the 243 in and have em put on a 44 mag. barrel. Or a 444, a 223 might be an extra since it's already there. Like my last post it would really be a deal if it had a touch more QC  and put a world of hurt on the Encores.

Well they replaced the barrel on this return so I take the bulge at the bottom of the brass cases I sent with the gun were enough to have them replace it. The bad thing about that is I had to unload 150 rounds in variouse powders and bullets I had loaded to test. They accomidated a request that I made as mentioned it was my 4th time sending it back and upgraded me to a thumbhole laminate from the synthetic thumbhole I had on it. Going to the range tomorrow hope she shoots. Lock up is good no wobble. Latch wiggles when closed. Spacer in to float the forearm. Keep you guys updated.

Well they arrived this afternoon.
It took a little under one month counting shipping both ways.
It arrived with the 357 mag mounted, it locks up better than a new gun.
I took it out and ran about a half dozen rounds thru it.
Seemed to be pretty accurate.
I'm hoping a scope will prove this true.

I haven't had a chance to shoot the 44 mag but I suspect it'll be the same.

My old stock was  no worse for the wear either.
They did replace my forearm screw.
I had a Lowes special on it when I shipped it, which they returned.

I'm completely satisfied with my experience.
