Anyone using 25-06 for coyotes?
« on: May 17, 2011, 05:19:49 PM »
I have a Tikka in that caliber, and I was thinking of 90 gr. Sierra BTHP over a suitable charge at about  3000 fps might be fun.  Too much?  Let me know what you think.

The only time that the phrase "too much" should be used in deciding on a caliber is if your are saving furs.  I use a 7mm-08 with a 150gr SBT.

The 25-06 is a soul snatcher that gets there fast and flat.  Have at it....................... 8)

The 25 06 is a fine open country rifle.

;) Depending on the wind conditions...my three coyote rifles are 1. a hot .22 cal., Swift, .22-250, or .22-250 Imp.
2. .25-06 with 100 grain Serria at about 3400fps... 3. .300 Win. heavy barrel, for long rg. and heavy winds...The.25-06 is a dandy for taking just one rifle in the pickup, but I seldom do that...

Dont forget about the 75gr pill in the 25-06.  They seem to be the ticket for incredible accuracy in ANY 25-06.

;) Swiftone,   I used the 75 grain Vmax on many coyotes...it was or is a real favorite...bought 500 of them, but wind is my main enemy when shooting at long distance, so for this country the 100 grain carries better in the wind, and also kicks up more dust or snow than the 75's....BUT you are right..in a country where the wind is NOT such a constant problem, the 75 grain is a real winner in the Vmax style...But in Wy. wind is a constant problem...what passes for wind in most of the country is only a breeze here...so the 75 grain is a good choice in most areas, maybe a better one due to its lighter wt. and more explosive quality.. it would be a safer choice..

Very true.  I hope I get to experience WY this year for speed goats.  I find out at the end of june.  Im hoping the 150gr SBT in my 7mm-08 bucks the wind well enough....I think it should.

Gonna say to much for the east coast.  We rarely need to reach out and touch them.  If it was my only gun I would blast away, but 22's are cheaper to reload with more than enough umph for our shorter ranges

try the 70gr blitzkings over a max charge of Varget,  the results are dramatic.   8)

87 grain Speer TNT in front of Reloader 19 for 3500fps and it's a coyote getter. I have a large bobcat mounted and it was shot at about 60 yds. No exit hole. I have shot the 2506 since 1971, in 7 different rifles. Everyone of them were one holers at 100yds, and I enjoyed them all, and of course I reloaded for them all. They are sensitive to overall length, meaning you had better not have the bullet shoulders touching the lands and grooves or you will get a face full of gas. The chamber pressure will skyrocket with such an event, but otherwise, it will shoot with any 270, and the even the 22250 at "way out there" ranges.
It is inherently accurate, and so much so, that it is occasionally used at Camp Perry matches for long range.
Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. Weak men create hard times.
