NEF 20gauge shotgun questions

Hi,

Just picked up a youth pardner, which I thought would be good for my wife, but the LOP just seems to short, and it might kick a little hard.  So...

1) Is the choate synthetic much lighter than a wood stock?

2) I'm new to shotgunning and I've been told the gun has a modified choke, but when I inspect the barrel, I can't tell a difference, are we talking thousandths of inches when we are referring to the various chokes?

Questions to answer before you start;

How are you going to use it, Home defense, range, varmint, off road???
Are you going to fit the gun to the lady as primary or you.
What does she think.
Has she shot it yet.
Are you going to use reduced loads.
What does she think.
Will she need a recoil pad.
Before she goes shooting with it does she have her own COMFORTABLE eye and ear protection.
Have you asked what she thinks.

I have modified these guns for nieces and nephews (Navajo) who watch Grandma's sheep up on the reservation.  They can go down to under 6 pounds and that includes sling, six rounds mixed ammo and a limbsaver.  Don't know how big your wife is but I have 90 pound nieces packing these light 20 guages and loving them.  Not a lot of money up there but a cheap bird shot cut round = dead coyote at 50 yds.

As far as I know the 20 ga youth model only comes in modified choke.  It should be marked on the top left side of the barrel.  Mine says "20ga 3" MOD" - meaning modified choke.

Don't know anything about the Choate stock.

I replaced the youth length stock on mine with a full size stock (wood) I bought from Brownell's.

Check the classifieds here as there are often stocks for sale.

Yes, choke is only a matter of thou's.....and you really still need to pattern test it to know.
A cheap slip on from your local discount store will work fine until you really decide which way to go. 20yrs on it still might be there..... .
The 20 is a nice gauge. I like 7/8ths and max 1 oz. 2 3/4" loads. Dont bother with the 3".
BTW, cheap 'Foster' slug loads usually shoot well from a bird barrel too.
Throw some empty plastic water/pop bottles out at different distances to shoot at so she gets a feel for it.

FYI, my son's 20 gauge shoots really well with Dixie Tri-Ball buckshot, Buckshot only has 3 pellets, patterns great at 40 yards, 3 inches, kicks hard try Dixie Slugs.com

True Bore Diameter = .617 inches
Cylinder Bore = .617"
Skeet I = .613
Improved Cylinder = .611"
Skeet II = .608"
Modified = .603"
Improved Modified = .598"
Full Choke = .592"
Extra Full = .590"
