Winchester model 670?
« on: December 29, 2003, 05:39:23 AM »
I have a Win 670 in .243 that I had shortened the stock on years ago for my kids.  Now that they are grown and I want to re-stock the rifle.  In the Midsouth catalog there are some synthetic stocks listed (forget the brand) but under Winchester, they list a model "670 Ranger".  Does anyone kow if the "Ranger" designation is a different rifle from the model "670" without the Ranger, name?  Or is it the same rifle and the same stock would fit?  THanks.

I believe the 670 and the Ranger to be different models.  I had a ranger in 243 and it had a hinged floorplate.  Does your 670 also have the hinged floorplate?  If so I'd bet the stock will fit 'either' the 670 or the Ranger.  Be careful though as Winchester makes a short action in the M70 series.  The Ranger was simply a hardwood stocked M70, with a bit less finish.  As Remington's M78.

no this model doesn't have a hinged floor plate.  I had a matching rifle in .308 that I sold, but the one I kept is in .243.

I checked my resources and it appears that at different times Winchester sold the "Winchester Model 670", "Winchester Ranger Youth Model", and  "Winchester Ranger".  All are discribed as having a non-detachable box magazine.  It appears they all had hardwood stocks.

The main difference in the Winchester Model 670 seems to be a 19 inch carbine barrel, a 22" sporting barrel, and magnum calibers had a 24" barrel.

The M70 Winchester has a 3-position safety, while the Model 670 has a 2-postion safety.

When in doubt make a phone call to the manufacture of the stock or the supplier.  You might go to the manufacture's web page for more information.
