Hi all.
With the advent of the .17 HMR surely we should see the return of the 5mm Rem. rimfire?
After all, it was way ahead of its time and I imagine if loaded with a 30-34gr poly tip bullet on modern day powders the good old boys should be able to wring 2500fps out of it.
Sure as hell beats a 17gr .17 cal!
Any thoughts.

Never happen. Remington killed that cartridge all by themselves by making it proprietary. The 17HMR is made by everybody who wants to.

Here's a thought of what to do with your 5mm Rimfire, have it lined to 17 HMR.

Read some where remington sold all the tooling for the 5mm ammo for scrap years ago so i wouldnt bet on it

It won't likely ever be coming back but that is a crying shame. I'd take it over the .22 mag or the .17HRM. Love that little 5MM Rem.

Yup I'm familiar with that option. If I ever manage to pick up another rifle in it again I'll do that but so far I've not located one at a reasonable price. I had a TC barrel I bought just to do this but decided I really wanted it in a rifle. Sure wish I'd have kept the one I bought new when they first came out.

What, in your opinion, was the reasons for the downfall of the 5mm Remington? I was going to buy one back when they first came out but being in college with a new family at the time money was in short supply. I always wonder what caused the demise of a good cartridge and the 5mm looked good on paper to me. Lawdog

They loaded it to higher pressures than the .22 mag. It gave them a good many problems. Initially I think it blew out a lot of cases until they got just the right material figured out. Even later I've heard of a lot of problems with blown extractors I think it was that was giving out. I never had any problems with mine. Kept it until ammo was just impossible to find and finally sold it to a collector. Wish I'd kept it now and gone to the centerfire reload option.

I've seen a few around gunshows over the years but the prices are always either way more than I'd give or the condition of the gun was just too poor. Some day I may run across a nice one at a price I can live with when I have the money. Not a super high priority for me.

You could take any Hornet rifle and have it rebarreled or lined and chambered to this or any other 5mm wildcat and that might be what I do some day. I think a K Hornet necked to 5mm would be a neat little rifle.

It kind of sounds like Remington didn't do enough testing before releasing the 5mm. With today's improvement's in powder and bullets design it could be an interesting cartridge again. Wouldn't it make an interesting comparison between the .17 HMR, 5mm RRM and the .22 WMR? Use the same make and model rifles to take out the rifle margin and just compare the cartridges. Lawdog

You must be able to read minds.
One of my reasons for asking the question is I have a near new 5mm rimfire barrel and have been toying with building a Martini 5mm Hornet or short Hornet.
Thing is I get the impression that most of the 5mm bullets (otehr than the Craig ones) are for velocities closer to 4000 than 3000fps.

I own a Rem. 5mm CF bolt action rifle and 2 boxes of ammo. The 2 boxes of bullets are worth just about as much as the gun. Kept it for many years and don't know why. Just about mint, think I've shot a couple hundred rounds. The ammo is just about extinct. Law enforcement is developing a 5mm pistol now, heard about that anyone?

OK Boss, just saw this. Question - how much have you shot a 17HMR, if at all?

Yep, I have a 5mm barrel as well just collecting dust - been trying to decide if I want to chamber it to one of the wildcats (not the Craig). But, with three 17HMR's now that shoot like lasers, that do way more than everything I ask of them, got a feeling the 5mm and the 22WMR's are going to collect even more dust. Will be interesting to see what gets the thickest layer of dust... the 5mm or all the 22WMR's. :wink:

Haven't shot the .17HRM Larry, and may never. Loved my 5MM Remington even more than the .22 Magnum back in the days when ammo was plentiful. Now the .22 Magnum does all I have any need for. I use mine mainly for back yard ferals and a few varmints. Nothing long range so flatness of trajectory for me is really of no consequence.
