a new obsssion.
« on: April 23, 2011, 08:54:18 PM »
I have always liked making a knife to use during hunting season every year.
Then I made a couple of ML rifles. Now I am getting back into archery so I
have now had to make my own arrows. Harvested my river cane and dried it since
last year. straightened it over a fire. I could not find any suitable feathers so I had to buy those.
Hammer forged my own points and then began assembly. I now have six arrows that shoot
Well, "As straight as an arrow". Looking forward to perforating something tasty this fall
with one.

Very cool, nicely done.  You'll have to go turkey hunting for some feathers!

Very nice, could you tell us a little more about the cane arrows. I really like wood, I use the split hex shafts.
Thanks Frank

These are made from river cane. The nodes are about 10-12 inches apart
unlike the more familiar cane with nodes much closer together.
Cane is also pretty easy to get straight over a small flame.
The removable tip on these arrows may not be traditional but
I got the Idea from My Atlatl darts. The idea behind this is that
the hunter carries one or 2 dart/spears and multiple pre-made
points. upon impact, the point stays embedded in the game
and the spear falls away to be retrieved and reloaded with another
point. It is efficient but I do not know how well it will work with an arrow.
