Just joined the SHORTY CLUB!
« on: April 18, 2011, 04:42:50 PM »
I finally took the plunge and got a 'smith / hobbyist friend take my 30/30 barrel and cut it back to 16.5 inches. He also recrowned it for me.  When I called to see if it was
finished, he told me he tried to give me an extra edge on accuracy and cut a target crown with an 11 degree angle. It is amazing looking! He also knew I wanted to iron sight it as well, so he measured and centered a mark on top of the barrel so I could bring him the sights and some dinero. WHAT A PAL!

I don't know why I waited so long, but now I have the itch to send some more to him! I got to round up the camera and shoot a little cheesecake shot or 3 for the gun pervs in the audience ;D  B RITE BACK!

I am contemplating a Remington front blade ramp and a NoDak peep for the time being.
I really wish I could get some XS sights for it, THAT would rock!

I think they do, but in only 45-70, 357 mag and 44 mag. All three are Talo exclusives with 18 3/4" barrels.

JD,
Nice shorty, be sure to let us know how it shoots, I also would like to know about the muzzle blast. I shot my Stubby this evening with just plugs in, my ears are still ringing...

Thanks, Dinny

Nice shorty!

I have a 30-06 shorty and I am close to deaf and I still have to wear ear plugs and muffs to shoot it at the covered outdoor range.  My short 06 is not quite as bad a 30 cal with a muzzle break but it is close.

Matt,

The front stud is an Uncle Mike's stud for a lever action rifle if I am not mistaken. It came installed on the barrel when I got it. Should solve the problem of the stud
stabbing my hand when I grip the forearm too close.  If the weather holds, I might get to shoot it today. I have to scope it first; thinking about the Simmons 4x shotgun
scope for optics. Or I might get the Burris 3-9x32 compact off my Mini 14 and move it to the Shorty.

If not for that stud you could put a BC forestock on it and almost have a Mannlicher. Pretty cool, but isn't 'shorty club' redundant? ;)

All four of my shorties are great. Ya'll should definately consider a LOP reduction also. All of mine have been cut to 13.5".

My 444Marlin,45-70,and 500S&W all have a 18.5" bbl. My 10ga shortie has a 20" bbl. For me, it makes all the difference in the world as far as handleing(mounting the weapon) and pointability/swingability.

I would absolutely agree to that. My Pa-in-law is a handicapped hunter and I am forever beating very thick river bottoms to get the deer out so he can get a shot. Needed something short and handy and didn't want to buy another rifle at the time. Did it's intended purpose quite well though.

Now I use a Mini 30 that does the job even better. The 7-08 is just kind of a spare/loaner rifle now.

CW,

I'm thinking about switching to the black PW set I got in a trade last week. Either that or the new black synthetics I got on the SB-1 357 I found at Gander Mountain when I was on vacation.  Maybe I will get with Stimpylu to paint it up for me! :o  Perhaps a fluorescent green or, dare I say PLAID!!!!! ;D

Actually, now that I thought about it, wouldn't a Black Watch plaid be the cat's ace?

LOL it sure would be different!!!  LOL

I have been spraying palletwood with Duplicolor truck bed coating for years. It's only OK for durability in the bed of your truck. But stands up like iron plated steel on a gun stock!!!!

It comes out looking like a synthetic but with the nicer heft and warmth of the wood.

For a rifled barrel, the barrel must be at least 16". Most go 16.5" or longer. Drop a dowel down the bore, mark it at the muzzle and measure. That's the length of your barrel. Then you have a 26" OAL length to consider again most go longer to avoid problems....

Very nice! I have seen a number of .243s and 7mm-08s for sale on some of the local boards very cheap and I can't help but think that one of those with a 16.5" barrel, a short LOP stock and a low power scope would be a very handy knockaround truck rifle.

Right now I have a Talo .357 mag that I replaced the rear sight blade on with a Williams Ghost Ring. VERY fast and surprisingly accurate at the ranges that I normally shoot.

Regards,
Danny

Danny,
Just a word about caliber selection for shorties. YES your correct a short barrel and butt make for a handi carbine. But caliber selection is key to shooting engoyment. Calibers like 243 & 7/08 are high pressure and will have hellatious blast and noise. Shotguns and pistol caliber rifles are your best choice for a shortie.

Nice rig, love the forend, perfect choice. You may have hit on the perfect truck gun.

If the target crown is so effective, what rifles normally ship with?

"I shot my Stubby this evening with just plugs in, my ears are still ringing...

Dinny, I lost a good part of my hearing in my right ear because I went to the range first with ear plugs, not muffs.

Forget the whales, save your hearing! Sorry for the little diversion from thread. :)

I had thought about that (been around a lot of rather short .223s being fired and that is no fun), and that is why my first purchase was in .357 mag (plus the obvious charm of ammo commonality).

These are just tempting because I have seen them for around $195-225 with pretty decent scopes on them.
