Favorite .44 Magnum Revolver?
« on: December 27, 2003, 12:10:21 PM »
What is your favorite .44 Magnum revolver for range and field shooting/hunting?   I've had. or have. a S&W 629 PP, Ruger Super Blackhawk, Ruger Bisley 7.5", and Acusport Ruger SS 5.5" Bisley in .44 Magnum.  The last one is the new one and, as you might guess, my current favorite.  Dennis

1st.   Blue, 5 3/4" New Model Super Black Hawk cut down from a 10 1/2" and Magnaproted.

Also have had one of the 5 1/2" Accusport Bisleys for the past 7 months but have not warmed up to it to date. Can't get used to the grip and hammer/trigger design.

Bisley is no more accurate than the modified gun.

Had a S&W Model 29 a few years ago but did not feel it was as strong as the Rugers so I got rid of it.

Easy one.  I have an old pre-warning Mag-na-port 5" SBH from before they started making the Predator.  Ken Kelly put a blue on this gun that you could comb your hair in (if I had any!).  I keep switching the grip frame.  It currently wears a satin nickeled aluminum one, which I really like as it is lighter for packing.  I tried a brass grip frame that went great with the gold plated hammer/trigger and cylinder pin, but that added a LOT of weight.  I keep thinking about sending it back to him to round butt the aluminum frame, thin the grips, and cut it again to 4".  Ken did that for a .45 RBH a few years back and that was a great packing gun.   44 Man

Ruger Super Redhawk, oops forgot this is the Single Action Forum.  Never had a single action I liked in a big caliber.

Its a tie between the Ruger Redhawk with a 5.5 barrel and the Ruger Super Blackhawk with the 7.5 barrel.

I've had the Redhawk longer but the SBH is sure growing on me!

Thanks Antony.  I really like that gun.  Just put in a Belt Mountain pin in it and I am eyeballing the Bowen rear sight.  It is great the way it is but I cannot help tweaking.

I have a 5" Super BlackHawk and a 7.5" Super Blackhawk.

I like to carry the 7.5 when trekking the back country, grouse hunting with a smoothbore, picking berries, etc., but not actually back-packing. For back-packing I switch to the 5" gun.

The 7.5" really shoots out to 100 yards nice, and I took a deer with it once at about 125-130 yards. The deer dropped like the earth had been pulled out from underneath it. It shoots a 250 grain bullet at a true 1534fps. I've shot a zillion grouse with it too, with shot loads.

The main load for the 5" is a hard cast 300 grain bullet at 1300fps, but it also likes the Speer 240 grain FMJ. Shoots them both to same POA. I've taken a few grouse with the 5" too.

Just recently I got the 5" gun Parkerized. I got the gun originally as a box of rusted parts, and much of the gun was too pitted to take all the way down in order to put a decent blue on it. The parkerizing looks great, really dark grey, with contrasting black ejector rod housing, loading gate, and grip frame. It's quite "unique".

:D  I have a series of Ruger Single Actions fitted with orange front sight inserts, white outline rear sight, and trigger jobs in .22,.45 Colt, .44 Mag on Blackhawk frame. I like the 5.5 in .44 best.. I did have a 6.5 in .357 one but swapped it.. I have shot deer with the 7.5 in .45 Colt.. Howsomever as the years fly past, I have trended toward hunting with a 6.5 inch S&W DX Classic with a Millet Reddot on it for the accuracy factor.. I also like my 4 inch S&W .357 Mountain Gun..Very accurate and a good weight to carry.. I am rambling now, but it depends on the task as to what my favorite one is,   for each has its' own best use...Cbagman

Favorite? Its a little like asking which of my children I like best. Each delight (and disappoint at times) in a different way. I have a S&W 629 Classic 6" (61/2"?) a Ruger 71/2" Vaquero, and a S&W 629 Mountain Gun. I had the Ruger all ready for deer hunting a few years back. I had handloaded some cartridges. I had practiced and was happy with the accuracy. I was in a tree stand early morning. A buck came by. I tried to line up the sights. They were fuzzy. I am 49 and pretty farsighted now. I need reading glasses. I used to think a scope on a handgun was stupid. Now it makes a lot of sense. I put a scope on the S&W classic. I have brought it along deer hunting. I havn't shot a deer with it yet though. I had a fawn come in a couple years ago and it would have been an easy shot with the S&W, but the deer was so small and unwary, I couldn't bring myself to shoot it. If I had to keep just one, I suppose it would be the Mountain Gun. It is the worst to shoot because it is so light. It is the best to carry because it is so light. I currently have the Ruger for sale. Not because I don't like it, but to get my money back so I can get something else. I have two other Ruger Vaqueros in .357 magnum for cowboy action shoots. I have a Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt and with a second cylinder  in .45 ACP. It is 51/2" and real accurate. I would like a .45 Colt Ruger Vaquero. Why? Mainly because I havn't had one yet.

Jim in Iowa: Acusport (like Lew Horton, Camfour, Davidsons and others) is a large outfit that wholesales guns to retail shops and from time to time arranges with gun manufactures for special limited runs of uncataloged guns.  over the last year or so Acusport has been order special editions (500 to 1000 guns) of 5" adjustable sight SS Ruger Bisleys; first in .44 Magnum, then .45 Colt and currently .41 Magnum.  There are rumors that they're going to continue the series with .357 Magnum and .22 LR.  They're fantastic shooters.  Acusports is HQ in Ohio. Older model Ruger 7 1/2" Super Blackhawk that the wife gave me for our fifth anniversary.  Out of my three(Ruger Super Blackhawk, Colt Anaconda and S&W M29) .44 mags. it's the one I always grab heading out the door hunting.  Lawdog

I just did the full Bisley conversion on my newest stainless 10.5" Super Blackhawk and it sure is sweet.   Had the stainless grip frame transfered over to my blue Mag-na-Ported 7.5" Liberty Super Blackhawk and it looks mighty sweet, too. 8)   I think the 10.5" has edged out the Mag-na-Ported Gary Reeder Classic Super Blackhawk Hunter for the time being, though -- sorry Gary. (May have to send the Hunter back to Gary to do a Bisley conversion on it.)  Can't leave out the Stainless Bisley Vaquero or the 7.5" blue Vaquero with brass gripframe.  Oops!  Only one of them?  :?    :-D

What I think would soon become my favorite, they haven't built yet!  A Ruger Vaquero 3 3/4"bbl round butt (in 44 Mag of course).  Thin the grips, Mag-na-port the barrel.  Then file the sights to hit dead on with 300 gr cast bullets at 900 fps (or 270s at 1000).  That would be one fine packing 44!   44 Man
