New to me 742

My new to me 742 30-06. This thing looks like it has not had a box of ammo shot through it.

Very nice! I just inherited one (30-06) with really nice wood but it had not been kept wiped down and had a lot of surface rust. I have only fired it nine times with Winchester SuperX 165gr. at 75 yards but in three, three shot groups I always had two touching and one thrown about 1.5 inches away for groups under 2". That is better than I would have thought. The trigger does suck however, very long, somewhat heavy and gritty pull.

I will be happy with 1.5" with this one. Im waiting on a 2-7 leupold that I sent back for repair. The guy I got it from bought it from a pawn shop. The owner said the girl that brought it in said it belonged to her daddy and just sat in his closet for years. Im going to try 165, 180, and 220 remmy's out of it.

In my mind they even look better with a shorter barrel.
If you got a gunsmith around, that trigger can be worked some.

With the type of hunting that you would mostly use a 30-06 for the trigger probably is not that big of a problem but is very noticeable from the bench at least when use to Accu triggers and double sets!

Nice rifle.  They are very popular up in Maine with deer and bear hunters.

Nice rifle.  I've had a 742 in 6mm Remington since 1972.  It's very pleasant to shoot and quite effective on deer!

Thanks guys. They use to be popular here in Texas also. I can remember as a kid there were always a couple in the hunting camps we went to. Now its mostly bolt guns.

Mostly bolt guns in our camp, too, except for my leveractions.

A levergun I should have bought when they were available was a Win 88 or the auto 100.

I'm actually refinishing the stock of a friend's Winchester 88 in .308 right now.  He doesn't hunt with it anymore; uses a .270 bolt action most of the time.

I had the ADL version, I bought mine in 1974, at a Woolworths :o, on 34th Street  :o, in NYC  :o, across from the Macy's flagship store  :o.  Nobody I tell that story to believes it  ???,  that department stores in NYC, use to sell guns  :P.
See Virginia, there was a Santa Claus in NYC at one time.  ;D
Good luck with the rifle.
