Question about bugs?
« on: April 10, 2011, 02:27:02 PM »
Need some help.

I started trapping muskrats, and had good luck until I pulled my catches from the pond.

Each of them had the craziest looking little green bugs attached to them.  Ugly little beggers, like maggots only green and clear down into the fur.

What are they and what does one do about them?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately I do not have any photos.  But I will try to give you a little more background.

I was trapping a stockdam about an acre in size, with a combination of bank dens and huts.  It is up a couple feet because of snowmelt and run off.  The muskrat population is good and from the muskrats that I observed swimming around they looked healthy.  I caught three right off the bat  using float sets.  When I retrieved the muskrats it was like they were alive with these little critters, not just on the surface but down into the fur.  Gives me the "creepy crawlies" just thinking about it.  I am new to trapping but not the outdoors and had never seen anything like it.

Also on the bottom of my floats there were what may be eggs, the same green color.

The floats where in the water about 16 hours by my best recollection, so they were not there very long.

thanks,

sherppa

Well that was some type of larva. If you get another rat in that condition, try to say the larva and see what it turns into.
