I am wanting to convert my 1911 into a back-up for a large bear hunt I am planning for several years from now.  I know of the 45 super, 460 rowland, and 45 win mag.  The 460 rowland is said to equal a 44 mag.  Any ideas hints or suggetions as to what carttridge conversion would be best suited for large bear?

Are we talking black bear or Grizzly?  Whole bunch of difference.  I would load your 1911 with round nose flat point lead bullets under a stiff load of Unique to about 950 - 1000 fps.  (don't forget to change the springs)  That's as good as any for black bear.  Any 230 to 250 gr lead bullet to about 1000 fps will do all you want to do.  Call it .44 spl / .45 colt / 44 mag, all will do.  If it is Grizzly, put the 1911 away and buy a Freedom Arms .454 casull!  Nothing smaller should even be considered.  44 Man

I wouldn't attempt to convert a 1911 to anything but a smaller round than 45 acp. This gun was not designed to handle high pressures  and trying to
make it do so is not only dangerous to you, but all of those around you. If you want a more powerful 1911 "style" pistol look into such pistols as a Grizzly or an Automag.

Why not just spend $300-$400 on a used Ruger or S&W 44 Mag?

got to agree spend the money you were going to use to convert on a gun that is up to the task.

Yeah,
  IF this is gonna be a working gun and you aren't too worried about looks or pretty, you can find stainless 44 5.5 inch barreled redhawks for VERY reasonable prices and while I don't like the single action trigger on them very much, they have good double action and you can stoke them real heavy with top end 44 loads with LBT style bullets and zap what ever it is that might come to try and eat you.

Shorter redhawks carry very well in a holster too.  I Like Smiths better, but this is one chore better suited to the ruger.

When I lived in Alaska I had my Ruger SBH 44 mag converted to a nice little packing gun by Mag-Na-Port Int.  I loaded it with some 320 grain hard cast bullets and never felt under gunned.  If you do end up purchacing a 44 mag you could also try the ammo loaded by Garrett Cartridges Inc.

I believe the 1911 frame won't accomdate the 45 Win mag. The 45 Super and 460 Rowland are good cartridges but I agree buying a used .44 mag may be a better way to go. A fellow in Alaska once told me many folks  up there use a .44 mag for protection and it's like peeing yourself in dark pants. It gives you a warm feeling but nobody really notices. If I was going to use a handgun for back up I'd use a double action revolver I could shoot well double action.
