last week, while out walking my rifle, I came across a young tree....maybe 5-6 inches in diameter...with claw marks runnning up and down this tree. they ran from the basse of the tree to about 24 inches hi. each "set' had 4 claw marks. I am thinking they were to low for Bear, so maybe Bobcat? I dunno.

I have seen the same thing. Me and my Uncle were walking thru the hay field looking for something to shoot. We noticed two trees that were scratched up like you mentioned. It was real close to the ground and they were really tore up. Looked like bear markings on a tree but were just way to low. Strange

As far as I know, there are no wild Boars in central Va...there are some in the Dismall swamp area (on the coast) and in the far south west corner.
I keep thinking it was a bobcat

There is diffently no boars in my part of WV. Still trying to think what it could have been.

It could be mountainlion making those marks. I have seen claw marks going up large trees 30'. It actually climbed a tree to see where we were. We were up on the ridge above it, while we heard the clawing/climbing we didn't know what it was until we went into the apple orchard by way of the access road and seen the fresh claw marks. These big cats run about 200lbs for the males. I don't fall asleep in my deer stand anymore.

Depends if the marks are from upward or downward motion.

I dont live where I saw these scratch marks, but will be down there in a week or two.
I will attempt to find and photograph them and put em on line...If I can get my buddies digital camera.

Like desertyote said we need pics. your best bet is to look at the sorounding area, look up it might be a porkypine . if other trees have marks up high and the limbs are ate off not broke then its porkypine.
lion and bear will pull up at the bottom , then come down from up high.
look around for a cat toilet, scratches on the ground most likly under a bushy tree. sounds more like a bobcat . thats my two cents worth and it's not much. Little Joe
