1100 Question
« on: April 01, 2011, 01:18:32 PM »
I ran across a used 1100 today for $225.00.  It had a really nice vent rib 28" mod. barrel and the forearm is perfect and nice looking.  The receiver had some pitting and a goodly amount of finish missing like someone had removed the rust that caused the pitting.  The buttstock looked nice but a little of the toe and buttplate were busted off.  I'm sure a newer buttstock would be no problem to find.  I've never owned an 1100 but I was wondering if it would be worth picking up as a project?

I have an 1100 that was similar to that only the wood and reciever were perfect and the barrel was trashed.
Bought a new barreland it works perfect.
I have been looking for another one that the stock and the finnish were messed up.
My thinking was to add a pistol grip stock and fore end, something cheap out of Cabelas and then strip the reciever and paint it and the barrel, and the bolt. Add a camo patern and a bright day glow front sight ,  Clean all the guts and reassemble for a turkey gun.
adding sling swivels.

id jump on it in a second if it runs. Probably send it to rem and have it reblued for a 100 bucks. If not it would make a good project gun to turn into a home defense gun.

Grab it if it's still available.  I don't have to tell you Remington makes quality guns.  You can't go wrong with a Remington.  I have the exact same 1100, 28" barrel, modified choke, & ventilated rib, bought it in 1970, when I got out of the service, I think I paid $200 for it. Used it for skeet, trap, and hunting for years. Was so happy with it,  I purchased two more, another 12 gauge, and a 20 gauge.  I also ended up buying two additional barrels, one with screw in chokes, and a cantilevered slug barrel for deer hunting in shotgun only areas. Literally thousands of rounds through the gun.  I take it down completely once a year and give it a good cleaning. The only thing that "broke" is the cap & screw on the pistol grip fell out on one of those field excursions, haven't bothered to replace it.
As far as pieces of the toe & buttplate being busted off, that part of the gun don't shoot.  The only parts that you might have to replace are the rubber gaskets.
