Trigger Creep On Encore
« on: April 01, 2011, 05:28:19 AM »
The factory trigger on my Encore pistol was a real bear out of the box. I only had a 7mm-08 barrel to start so I put about 20 rounds through it before I decided to do a trigger job. A friend gave me the Bellm tools and instructions and I bought the 3 spring set. I want to say I ordered 1,2,3. I decided to install the #2 spring set to start. I did very little "stoning", just a little polishing might be a better description.
I now have a .17HMR and .223 Rem barrel so I am getting the shoot the Encore more. After several range visits, I am noticing that there is a touch of creep in the trigger before it fires. I like the weight of the pull so far.
Do I feel the creep because I didn’t polish/stone the mating surfaces enough or is that more of a sear angle issue?

The Encore trigger is not the most gunsmith friendly in the world but creep is disconcerting. It is caused by the sear moving a bit before the striker sear is released. In an adjustable trigger this is taken care of by a screw limiting how much the sear surfaces mesh. I a non-adjustable trigger the release point is altered by stoning, very carefully an angle roughly 45 Deg on the ends of the sears. When this is reached the sear will be released.. If overdone the trigger WILL be dangerous. I strongly advise you to keep the sears angles neutral as altering them can also create a dangerous situation... Just a note-the components that must be altered are retricted by the factory (at least they were) so if they are made unuseable a trip to the factory will be in order..and that will likely NOT be covered under the warrantee..

I just reread Bellm's directions on the supplied stone and diamond lap. They are both 80 deg. With the diamond lap you take the sear notch from 90 deg to 80 deg and then use the 80 deg stone to put a finish polish. I think I'd try the softest, #1 spring set first to see how it feels before I get to carried away with the lap and stone.
Thanks for the input.
