Cougars in Northern Kentucky
« on: March 27, 2011, 07:06:54 AM »
Wondering if anyone has seen one or had an experience with the big cat in Northern Kentucky?  Cougars made the news here a few years ago. A cougar was seen by a farmer near us in Southern Campbell County around this time last year.

I believe I have found cougar prints and a deer killed by a cougar in Northern Campbell County.

If there is a print around after this rain would you be able to make a plaster of Paris casting?
A friend did that with a huge dog-like print he found on his property a few years ago.
Would be easy to confirm then.

I've heard rumors but have never seen one myself.  South Central part of the state.

Hi LC.  Thanks for the suggestion.  Unfortunately I was pretty deep in the woods and the print was muddy and squished.  It was a very large print in an extremely narrow creek.  Because of size of the print, I thought horse, but there is no way a horse would be there.  I kind of blew it off until I found the deer.  Interesting at best.  Our farm neighbor in southern campbell, watched a cougar come out of the creek there, chasing deer.

The Mtn Lion can live right beside you for years and you will not know it. Oh, maybe when your best bird dog doesn't show up at his food bowl. And you find his collar and tags in some draw near your house. >:(

I've personally seen one in central KY. There is another thread on it in this forum on about the 2nd or 3rd page. ;)

Did see that other thread on cougars in Kentucky.  One of the local television stations had some footage of a cougar near here about 5 years ago.  I'm convinced what I am seeing is evidence of a cougar.  The deer I found slaughtered was huge and it was a very clean kill.  Like what else could take down a deer like that? Found out later I should have looked for other evidence that would have identified it was killed by a cougar.  Will keep looking.  Thanks for all the help.

I do know of some Bengal Tigers being spotted near the Georgetown Exit but I think they come down from Ohio.  ;D

That is a good report even gave the exit number.  That had to have been a real sighting. :)

I wouldn't worry about those Bengal Tigers.  They can't catch anything!

On the topic of cougars, I'm sure there are a few in the NKY area.  Why wouldn't there be?  We had that black bear a few years ago, that came up from the southeastern area of the state.

I know they are in Eastern KY, I've seen them on a game camera in Lewis County.  It's less than 90 miles from my house to where that camera was mounted.  They can be around you for years and you'd never know.  Nothing is as stealthy as a cat.  I know that there have been times in the past when I had "that feeling" of being watched, yet I never could find anything.

I seen something cross the road (Wilson Creek Rd.) in Northern Nelson County about 3 weeks ago that was long and tawny. Coulda been a bobcat but this looked big for a bob, probably 60+ pounds. I wouldnt doubt there here, my buddy swears that he had a bear rip his tent open and destroy his camp on Ft Knox on the Salt about 40 years ago.
I break for animals, I eat them and wear their skins.
