Took Charlie Feist on his first hunt today.

We didn't find a thing but five early robins.  Charlie worked like a dream.  Circleling me at 20 to 60 yards, always in sight.  I never had to call him or command him in any way.  It was fruitless, but fun, and not the dogs fault.  He worked hard.....we both did.  Better luck next time.

I would love to have one but my wife is alergic to everything but poodles and they're worthless in the woods.  congrats.

Ya know, poodles used to be a hunting breed.  I wonder if any of them would still work?

my wife rescues them from the pound.  her current one "male" acts like he would like to be out hunting but since he's stone deaf a coyote could easily catch him.
things are really different when you can't call your dog.  however, he's really good with hand signals.  I still catch myself talking to him and all I get is a blank look.

BUGEYE, my wife's hearing is fine, but when I talk to her she gives me a blank look also. Maybe the dog thinks your stupid, just like my wife thinks I am.

All Charlie needs is a little exposure to the woods and wildlife! Especially next season if opportunity happens where he might encounter a wounded squirrel on the ground or better yet he jumps one and trees it!
Nothing like a good feist hunting squirrels! Well other than a good old bluetick hound!!

I have a Jack Russell that is a squirrel hunting machine. It is a good day to watch'em work, and like streak says: EXPOSURE! Did you know the difference between a perch and bass before you were exposed? Just be sure not to crank any big guns off around him until he knows what they mean.

I've been putting him in the big run with the other dogs and then shooting the .22 in the yard.  I'm hunting with a Pardner .410.  I had him out again yesterday morning with temps in the single digits.....same story...nothing.  Id think the squirrels are just holed up til the weather moderates.
Charlie really seems to know what he's looking for.  He's got his nose to the ground, trees and  fallen trees, dead trees and logs.

I don't know about your part of the country, but March is squirrelin time. Their either very heavy with babies, are have already had them. They stick pretty close to the nest this time of year.

That is true Dee, here in my neighborhood the local fox squirrels are not as active as they normally would be!
About a week ago I was out in the back yard practicing my archery when off to my right side I noticed some moverment and it was the "nut beggar" on the ground setting there like he was critiquing my form and skill! He and the bloodhound have a very interesting relationship!

Also petemi be darn sure and don`t miss the first squirrel that Charlie finds! ::) ;D

Streak, I don't shoot at anything unless I'm 99.9% sure I'm gonna get it.  I'm to old for snap shots and missing or tracking wounded game.  The big problem I'm having with him now, is that if I take him out for his mornings/nightlys, he wants to run off and hunt.  He knows where home is and comes back, but I worry about him getting nailed by a wolf or coyote.  He's learning to stay in the yard unless I take him out back.  I question whether a wolf or coyote could catch him.  He's lightning fast like a grey hound.

10-4! on the not shooting anything unless you are 99.9% sure of getting it! I`m in the same category as you on taking snap shots and possibly tracking wounded game!
Use to squirrel hunt in E.Texas with a bluetick hound. She invariably would strike out on her on as we were getting ready to come out of the woods! So we started to taking a leash with us and when we got ready to come out of the woods and at the first opportunity would catch her and slip the leash on her. Always kept the leash out of her sight until she was caught!

If Charlie is fast like a grey hound he might have a chance!
Anyway lot`s of luck with your endeavors with Charlie!!
