Just brought home my new 10 ga Turkey gun!
« on: March 24, 2011, 03:45:50 AM »
Well, I finally picked up a 10 gauge last night. I hope to get out and pattern it this weekend. I have also been looking at either a jellyhead choke or a kicks choke. Has anyone had any luck with the stock xfull choke?

Don't under estimate the factory choke.  I would pattern it before buying an aftermarket one.

That's my way of thinking too, I moved from a 12ga to 20ga, hammer toms, easier on my body, lighter to carry too.  ;D

Sorry navyone, not much help here!  :-X

The local gunshop offered me such a deal on it I couldn't turn it down. Besides I have also been looking for a 12gauge USH for awhile with no luck. I will probably be sending the receiver in next week to have the barrel fitted.

In the 'evil old days' the 10s, and even 8s were used, but not with the magnum-maximus loads we use now. Im not for sure and for certain, but arent a bunch of the 12ga. loads using a pretty heavy payload? A 10 with a decent shot column height at about 1250fps should have a good pattern and not blow a bird up even as bad as some heavy 12ga., dontchathink?

Well I just put a BPS 10 gauge on lay-a-away, so I understand the 10 gauge line of thinking.

I tote a 6 pund 20, a 7 pound 12, and a 9 pound 12. I love my 20 for run-n-gun situations and tight woods, but I find the heavy 12 to be an oxy-moron. If I am going to shoot a 3.5" 12 gauge for field turkeys, I may as well get a 10 gauge for the extra gun weight and option of heavier payload.

Now my 10 won't get toted everyday of the season, but if I have a turkey continually hang up or fly in a field to strut, or am going out of state to hunt it will be with me! I look at it the same as shooting deer with a 30-06, a 22 mag will kill them --- I still want my -06!

Congrats on your new weapon of mass destruction!! I have one with a kicks goblin thunder 680 tube with a muller scope. It will shoot 175 in a 10 inch circle at 40 measured yards with winchester supreme lead #6.  Remember kicks tube will not shoot heavy shot!!! But with those numbers and cheap shells I am satisfied. By the way its gonna rattle your teeth so hold on tight and get your friends to help sight it in. I wish I was your dentist ;D ;D

I was able to get out and do a little pattern testing over the weekend. I had a box of federal premium #6 and a box of winchester supreme #5. At 25, 30 and 35 yards both had a great pattern but the federals were shooting low-left at all three distances, I think I will pick up another box of the federals for next weekend to try patterning at further distances. Also, I noticed last Thursday that the screw hole in the forend was more oval than round, and the screw wouldn't even screw in flush with the stock. After a quick call to customer service, I have a new forend on its way to me.

It might be the lug is off-center on the barrel and thats why the hole was ovaled to fit.

I'm still hoping to find a used 10 ga barrel in our classifieds someday.
Chances are slim though.....
Usually, the barrels for sale around here cost more than a whole single shot shotgun found on local stores.
SB1 and SB2 receivers
.223 bull barrel with scope rail
12, 20, and .410 gauge smooth bore barrels
(next on wish list: .357 and .44 mag barrels)

More power to ya' friend, and I hope it's all you wish.   I looked at a ten once, for just a moment. Then I realized that what I thought was a beer can was ammo.    I'll stick with my wussy 45-70 :-X

Is the recoil really that bad?

I was thinking of mercury recoil reducer in the buttstock, a limbsaver pad on top of the buttpad, and a nice padded shotgun vest should be more than enough to tame the beer can ammo........ ;D

The recoil is not that bad...Not any worse than a 3 1/2" 12GA...Shoot what you want and have fun...Don't let the lightweights get you down.  ;)

The kick wasn't really that bad, I shot 18 rounds on Saturday, and it wasn't any worse than the Browning with 3 1/2" magnums that I have shot in the past. I haven't shot it in a while but IIRC the 338 winmag has quite a bit more kick.

What choke system does the 10 gauge use? Anyone know of a distributor that has the guns in stock? Thanks

Congrats on the 10 gauge and don't listen to all these guys.

Sure you can use a 12 or 20, but heck you can also use a .223 for deer so why shoot a .270 or 30-06 etc. etc.?

Its a great gauge and one I use for most of my hunting.  Use it often and enjoy it.

Why do I use a 10 guage? because they dont make an 8 guage. Jellyhead choke gives me well over 300 hits in 10 inch circle at 40 yards.  Recoil?  Yeah sure but usually only shoot a few rounds per year.  Mike

10 ga has 50 lbs of recoil with 2 1/4 oz loads in a 9 lb gun the 12 ga 3.5 with 2 1/4 oz loads have 70 lbs in a 7 lb gun and in those 5 & 6 lb shotguns about 90 ft lbs . with the bps and semi auto 10 ga recoil is 40 lbs . so when some one ask why use a 10 ga say cuz it has less recoil :) . yeha my h&r uses browning invector choke system . i bought a trulok .680 turkey choke and it doesnt pattern as good as my factory choke . i have a bps 10 stalker on backorder sine feburary should be in a few more weeks . people who shoot the 10's find out htey are real pussy cats and they want to buy one then

I thought one reason for shooting 10s is in order to get the same effect as an overloaded, over-long 12 ga with a better shot column.  Same reason I shoot 20 ga loads in my 12 for upland game, because american makers all have magnumitis, and the guns actually shoot better backed off a little.

The reason they sell the 10s seems to be to get longer range performance, because it comes with an even tighter choke, than the 12 does, with more shot.  That only makes sense to have the same pattern density at a longer range?

My dad used to deer hunt with a 10ga.  75 yards on a deer was no problem.  A 10ga should pattern better than a 12 with the same payload.  Due to the shorter shot column and less deformed shot.  However, I read an article about the H&R 10 one time and after 3 shots he was black and blue.
