Good morning
As I hunt river bottoms and thick woodsy stuff I am fortunate to see a critter beyond 25 yards.. so my longest revolver shot was a young buck fired up with a Dan Wesson .375 Supermag 8" barrel 255 grain lead (Lyman 375248) 50/50 mix traveling at 1255 fps (crono avg) seated over #1680.  Buck was wacked through the chest & both lungs at a wopping 17 yards.  I purposly used this slow load to duplicate the 38-55 BP load I will never get to pop a deer with in Illinois when I am there.  Normally I use a recurve on corn crunchers.
Back when I shot "silly wets" (81-82) I practiced with my Dan Wesson 41 mag 8" by head shooting the targets from the lay down creedmore position.  Won Illinois AAA Revolver in 82 that way.  210 grainer over #296 powder.
Down here in Peru my longest shot was with a 38 Special Colt Police Pos. 4" loaded with a 168 grain lead SWC (Lyman 358429) 50/50 mix over 4.5 grains Unique. Saw A viscacha (rock marmot) sitting on some rocks I was crawling about at 35 yards.  Slipped the slug through the shoulders at it was sitting there in the sun half asleep.  Not bad eating slow Bar B Qued.  Mountain people hang the flesh on cloths lines to dry.. eats like shoe leather.

Most of the time I am hunting in pretty thick stuff, but two seasons ago I was easing back to the truck at noon to meet up with my hunting buddy.
As I came out of the woods I looked up a hill where an old wood broken ladder stand was leaning against a big tree. There was a nice doe feeding around it.

I had a 7.5" Ruger Redhawk .41 mag with an UltraDot sight. I had a forked stick as a walking stick/rest. The doe dropped on the first shot and acted like she wanted to get back up. I dropped my pack and ran up the hill to find her dead at the base of the tree.

I ranged back to my pack and stick and it was 106 yards.

Before that I had shot a buck at 80 yards across a food plot with a scoped 7-30 waters.

Normally 30-60 yards is where my kills seem to take place.

My longest shot on game: Antelope buck taken at 287 yards, T/C Encore 30-280 AI. Nosler 165 Accubond at 2734 FPS.

Longest shot at targets: 200 yards with T/C Encore 280AI. 3-shot group measured 1.1". Also shot my T/C Encore 284 Win the same day with nearly identical results.

One shot at game was last year. Using my Mathews Ovation bow, I shot a squirrel at ~38 yards (previous year, I shot one at 28 yds).

I've taken several deer with a handgun, but this was my farthest. Nice PA doe taken in 2008 at about 75 yards. Ruger Super Redhawk .44mag with a 2-6x Bushnell scope. The load was handloaded Hornady 240gr HP-XTP's over a stout load of H110 and CCI LP mag primers.

This is one of the most interesting and well written threads I've ever seen. Thanks to everyone for sharing your hunting experiences, short or long shots. I am awed by both.

Like a lot of guys I don't get chances at many long shots in Michiagn, especialy where I live and now hunt. Lots of farm country but also lots of houses and villages everywhere.

I've only ever taken pistol shots in the upper half of the lower at about 120 yds on deer. Very effective kill with a 45/70 Gov and hand loads. I wished I could still get up there. Was quite beautifl some years ago with lots tall standing oaks mixed with pines, now most of it has been cut down. I've also taken long shots on squirrel but nothing like you guys.

but one memory of shooting with my High Standard supermatic citation in .22 was shooting at flying balack birds and sparrows. It was fun shooting and watching them fall like lead shot. I wished I still had that gun, was very accurate and fun to shoot. I also killed coon, squirell and wood chuck with it but not far, .22 just isn't very powerful.

This year I am going to go hunting again with my Cintender pistol but am using a 14" 44mag barrel. Likely won't be any long shots as most of the hunting grounds I hunt is less distance accross then what you guys are shooting at.

Its also great to see all you guys using hand loads. I just hope our federal gov. doesn't mess with our rights.   >:(  I'm also impressed with all the fancy extreme long range hand guns and the awesome shooting with them. Great thread guys.
Protect our constitution, all of it. Our kids future depends on it. And please teach them Conservatism.

As I have probably mentioned before, a friend of mine and I like to head out to the open country of Wyoming every year and shoot/plink a lot and also hunt whatever prairie dog towns we might come upon.  This year, we spent a lot of time shooting at ridiculous ranges with our Ruger Blackhawks, calibers ranging from 357 magnum, hot loaded 38-40's, 44 mag and hot loaded 45 Colt, and 454 Casull.  What do I mean by ridiculous ranges?  I'm not even sure to be honest.  ???  In most cases, bullets would be in flight roughly 3.5 to 4 seconds.  At what we guessed to be an average velocity in overall flight to be roughly 1000 fps, the bullets were probably traveling roughly 3000 to 4000 ft.  Now, we weren't shooting that far because we were shooting at one heck of an angle upward and the bullet path was sure to be much like a stretched out rainbow.  If I had to honestly guess, we were probably shooting at ranges of roughly 500 to 600 yards.  Our targets were generally old prairie dog mounds and/or very small brush or juniper bushes, so we're talking about target areas that are probably five to six foot across.  It took us a while to learn how to judge the use of our front sights and most of the time, the base of the front sight was set at level with the rear sight in order to compensate the angle needed to reach these distances.  After about an hour or so, we became very proficient with hitting targets at these distances.  Often times we would hit a mound three out of six times and many of the misses were very close to hits.  This was one heck of a lot of fun to do and I would strongly recommend that if one wants to learn how to shoot at long distances, this is a very amusing way to do it.

OK, enough of the background.  On our last day out, we came upon a dog town and were shooting at them for a little while.  The dogs were roughly between 125 to 200 or more yards out so they weren't in much danger or being wiped out at that distance.  I had noticed that my shooting partner was having a bit of trouble with adjusting his aim with a different load of 357 he was shooting so I gave him some time to make some adjustments and basically spotted for him.  After about three cylinders full, he became frustrated and I just couldn't wait to take a shot.  So, once he emptied his last cylinder, I reached down, drew my 45 Colt Blackhawk and with one hand took a quick aim and shot.  Bang!..THUD!  I honestly didn't think I was going to hit this guy since I somewhat "quick" drew from the holster and shot with only one hand but down he went!  My guess was that the shot was around 180 yards.  Later I walked it and paced 173 paces.
Although I did take a good long aim at this dog, it was definitely one of those lucky shots being that I didn't take much time between the time of drawing from the holster and squeezing a round off, not to mention that it was a one handed shot.  The point is that this kind of shooting IS possible and is really a lot of fun!

I love hearing about all of these long distance shots because it makes me think back on all of the long distance plinking I do and it's just so much fun!

Lots of impressive distances being shared.  I shoot a Contender in 7-30 with 120 gn Ballistic tips (hand loads).  My only and longest shot at game was a smallish 10pt at 70 yds. I rested it on a downed poplar tree.   Then I just stuck with my rifles for some years.  This year the 7-30 will be with me again.  I figure my distance limit will be 100 yds give or take a few.

230 paces (my paces tend to be around 1 yard) on a quartering standing broadside whitetail buck shooting from a sitting position. I was shooting a 15" Bullberry 6.5 mm Bullberry Improved on a Contender frame shooting a Nosler 120gr BT using IMR 4320 powder at 2347FPS (through my chronograph). My scope was a Burris IER 3X9 PA.This particular barrel will shoot well under an inch (5 shots) @ 100yds  on a regular basis. The deer ran about 75 yards before giving up the Ghost. The bullet caught the tip of the heart and took out the bottom of one lung. I once shot at a buck right at 300 yards with a Remington XP 100 in 35 Rem. I held high (too high) and the bullet went over his back. I felt confident out to 200 yards with that particular gun but misjudged the range on that shot (pre rangefinder days). Good shooting.

My son had his longest shot this past October when antelope hunting.  Here is the story:
It rained almost all day before hunt day.  We dearly needed it, but it was also supposed to rain through most of the evening with rain also called for this morning.
Erik and I had already decided we were not going to make an early start, but sleep in and head out sometime before noon to avoid rain.  Erik also had a friend stay the night who would be with us for the antelope hunt. I had my 6.5 Leopard XP-100 (AKA Pink Panther-6.5-WSM) with me but really did not intend to use it unless we just happen to come up on a big mule deer or some unsuspecting coyote.
Erik is using the 7mm SAUM Remington XP-100, built by Mac’s Gunworks.

Optic is a FFP Leupold Mark 4  6.5-20 with Holland’s ART reticle.

I use H-1000, Federal 210 M’s, Remmy brass with the necks lightly turned and the brass worked over for consistency.

Muzzle velocity with the 162 A-Max is 2759.  Recoil is all but nothing with Holland’s Radial brake.
Erik has been shooting this specialty handgun for well over a year out to 1000 yards, and has been real proficient with it from field shooting positions.  While at Holland’s Long Range Shooting School this past spring he told me out of the blue, that come October he wanted to take a buck antelope over 500 yards.   I didn’t doubt his ability for this distance if conditions were good and he was relaxed.  I said, “Sounds good to me.”
Once we got to where we could hunt, we quickly spotted a group of lopes and saw an average buck for this area.  Erik had told me earlier he didn’t really care about the size of the antlers, but was looking for a good shot opportunity.  First we thought he may be able to just go into the field a little bit for a shot, as they were 530 yards away, but the animals moved over a slope before he could get set-up.  We moved further to the east and then started heading north to see if we could find them again.  We kept seeing some does, but the buck wouldn’t show himself.  Finally the buck popped out of the drainage.  We made our way slowly (single-file) to a high spot, so Erik could set up prone.  Made it there and ranged the buck at 510 yards.  Erik is getting set-up and I happen to look at the XP and notice the bolt was missing!  “Erik, where is the bolt?”  He looked at me with ‘deer in the headlights’ kind of look.  It ended up being back in the Tahoe.
So now we have to go all the way back to the vehicle, get the bolt, and head back to where he had set-up.  As you would guess, the buck had disappeared.  Question now was, which way.  We move off to the right into a north/south drainage to avoid a baby buck and some does.  We spot him again, and get up on top set-up, but to no avail as he goes over another ridge.
Now we are more or less in the open now going basically north trying see where he went, when we noticed a herd to our NNW.  There he is, or it is possible it was another buck who was very similar.  Regardless, we need to make our way to the left to a higher spot for a shot opportunity.
The wind is almost a full value averaging around 7mph.  With the terrain and everything I told him to dial for a 5mph full-value wind.  The buck had been herding does around off and on, so we waited till he had his fill of that and was standing still eating.  At the shot, I was prone with my binos, and I could tell he had hit him, but it took some time for the meat report to make its way back to us.  The rest of the herd moved to the west going up the hill, but the buck turned and went the other way going down the hill.  We saw him crash, about 50 yards away.  Erik’s classmate was using my Swaro LRF and I was using the Leica 1600 LRF.  Both worked great, but I was wishing for my small tri-pod to make ranging easier.
Erik made his 500 yard goal and then some.
He killed that buck with one shot at 690 yards.
Not bad for a teenager with a specialty pistol.
I am very proud of him!

I think my longest shot was with a ruger super redhawk chambered in .44 magnum . I was in a tree stand and a freak snow storm started just then a whitetail doe followed by a spike buck chasing her and a five point buck chasing both and grunting. I waited till they ran in a circle back up the hill on my right and I shot the five point at about 60 yrds.right through the shoulder. While he was on the run ! I didnt have a range finder but , I paced it off from the tree to the kill by striding . I have a 3 foot stride as I am 6'5" I shot and killed others at 40-50 yrds.and many others at less yardage. I know it isnt as impressive as some of you super fine handgunners but, it was an accomplishment for me.
thanks Stan

I once nailed a woodchuch at 100 yards with a S&W M17 revolver rechambered to .45 Colt.  It was probably the most innacurate handgun I have ever owned, but I think that I shot more chucks with it than any other.  Let me tell you, that was the most unluckies, most stupid chuck I have ever seen!  The first shot was low since I could see the dust where it hit.  I kept raising the front sight above the rear sight and walked the next 3 shots closer.  The 5th shot was too high so I lowered the front sight a bit and killed it on the 6th shot!

New long shot 115 yrds on a nubbing buck with my TC Contender  10" 7mm TCU.  High shoulder shot spined him and dropped him in his tracks.  Load was a 120gr Nosler BT over a Max charge of H4227.   Though the result was a dead deer,  the bullet appeared to have came apart shortly after penetrating the hide, blowing a fist size hole going in and completely fragmenting on the vertebre it struck.  This was on a 90 pound deer.  I think i will be switching to the 140gr NBT.
