***Primitive Fleshing Tools***
« on: March 22, 2011, 11:24:29 AM »
A few years back, I had this idea in mind of making primitive fleshing tools and acquired three scapulas from a friend of mine. Well yesterday I got off of my dead ass on this and proceeded to make a knife out of one. With the two smaller ones, I'm going to just cut an edge on the ends and see how these work out next season.

The following photos shows what I'm talking about...

Another natural item that works for scraping or cutting is the bone cheek piece on large carp.  I found this accidently looking at  some carp a bowhunter had  deposited in a gravel pit.   I saw the cheek piece  which was  bleached white by sun and clean.  Without doing anything to it i cut  things with its knive like edge and used it to scrape a mink and rat hide.

Thanks for the tip Lee! I'll have to keep that in mind and try it some time!!!

Didn't your friend complain when you took his Scapula's? why did he have three was he freak in a carnival? LOL!
Seriously I've not seen any scrapers made of bone but I know the natives used them. My sister has one she found on her beach made of the stone from Hixton. It is a type of fine grain quartz, lots of points are made from it.
One of my first scrappers I made from a cheap mower blade I bought for couple bucks on clearance. Did quit a few coon with it before I bought my Necker. I still have the mower blade hanging by my bench, but must say I like the Necker better. I think you can find most things you need in nature if you have the eye for it. Natives did it to survive we just got lazy because we can go to the store.

Split leg bones from large animals (cow, buffalo, etc) work really well.  Cut one end off and then split down the middle.  Then grind an edge on the end you cut off.  After this has been done you have to cut small 'notches' in the 'scraper' edge to make it work well.  Without these notches bone scrapers tend not to work well.

I heard of this before RJ and I want to make it. Have you used this yourself?
