Best way to strip metal?
« on: March 19, 2011, 02:29:13 PM »
What is the best way to remove blueing/paint from barrels, trigger guards, bolt handles etc?

Have used naval jelly and a chemical stripper from the local hardware store, they got some off but there is still a lot of finish left.

Would soda blasting, or another soft media be a viable option?

What brands/types of chemical strippers really work?

Any other ideas?

Naval jelly works for me but Brownells sells a bluing/rust remover in they're catalog. Polishing after the removal up to the level of finish desired on the completed firearm. On guns requiring only a hunter grade finish I've used a wire wheel (thin wire) run lightly to give the piece an even tone prior to finishing..

Thanks for the reply.

A little more searching foud that people were having some pretty good success using plain vinegar.

I cleaned a couple of pices and let them soak in vinegar for about 30 min, took them out and wiped them down, completely stripped  amazing.
