FHA-NAFA OR ?
« on: March 17, 2011, 03:00:38 AM »
This is just a topic starter....

Who do you sale too? What do you think?

I sale Nafa even tho I have a FHA pick up less than a mile from my house. The NAFA pick up is about 20 miles from the house.Alot of reasoning there LOL!!!In my little world I guess it does.I guess I'm just set in my ways..

The last few years I have been taking my pelts our trappers association auction.
My reasons have been that
1.) It helps support our local trapping organization (Idaho Trappers Association) as 6% of the sale price goes to them.
2.) There has been quite a few buyers so I feel like they give it their best shot if you've got good stuff.
3.) I have the option to sell or not to sell as I see fit.
4.) I get paid the same night of the bid openings - no waiting for weeks to years for my money.
5.) I get to compare my pelts and put up against others.
6.) Most people are very willing to talk about their methods of trapping and putting up their furs.
And maybe the most important reason -
7.)  I get to see and talk with some of the other trappers that I haven't seen since last year and catch up on "things".
Thanks,
Trapper Jack

Good points Jack and Mike...

I go to the local Trappers association auctions also..But it just to support them and help out if needed.More so to b.s. tho.I took to big of a whoop'n on pelt prices....

Maybe it's just me.But over the years it seams that Fha has better avg on rats and beavers than Nafa.Nafa seams to do better at everything else...

I sell to FHA .  The company is owned by trappers .  NAFA is owned by ranch mink  owners.  One auction house will have a few cents more on certain pelts either FHA or NAFA.    Go with who you are comfortable with.  I know alot of former NAFA  shippers went FHA this year.  Good luck where ever you decide.

i got $14.50 on each grayfox i sold to a country buyer all just skinned not stretched and dried.the fha average was 15 something on put up fox..i didnt do bad considering that..next year i might try groenwald.i wont use neither fha or nafa cause i see where sometimes it takes a couple years for the furs to sale.and i dont want to wait that long.

ewok, i believe with fur brokers you have to have a certain number of pelts per species of furbearer.

Thanks RdFx

I didn't know how that broker deal worked.I know we have a broker just over the NY border.I called a few times but never got a call back.

Just yesterday I talked a local buyer. The local buyer here said he is shipping all his furs now strait to Turkey.Maybe he is what you call a broker now?His avgs where impressive this year.I guess it pays to do your homework.

I at times ship to NAFA, but for the majority of my furs--its local buyers. I have been dealing with one local buyer for over 30 years. I know ahead of time what I am going to get for each of my spring beaver.

From 1980-1987 I sold all my fur through the WTA run fur sales.
When the crash came I sold to local buyers from 1988-1994-5
From 1995-2000 I sold at a WTA district 7 and 8 fur sale and shipped to FHA/NAFA the later goods ( typically very few pelts.
I sold almost all fur to Groenwalds from 2001-2005
From 2005-2009 all fur was shipped to NAFA

Now my market plan is this
Local buyers 20%
We started our own District 8 sale the last two years they get 20%
NAFA 60%
What I really like about shipping if very detailed reports that are really educational and I can sort fur to different accounts and track how they grade and sell.
What I don't like about shipping now is that there are very few auctions and not any early to help set a market.
I want to start FHA next season. My catches were too low this year to divide things up that much in 2011

I always wondered how Greonwalds would work out...If they had pick ups here I'd give them a try.I'm just to far east.
