I was approached - in an elevator - in the hospital!
« on: March 07, 2011, 02:12:20 PM »
My mother's been in the hospital for a few days and this morning I went to check on her.  As I got into the elevator, I noticed an older gentleman and a young girl in the back of the elevator with a smile on her face.  I was wearing my Fur Takers of America ballcap with a coon on the front.

As the elevator doors shut, the older gentleman kept looking at me.  So I got tired of it and looked back at him with a stern look on my face and he finally spoke up.  "Huh, Fur Takers of America.  Do you hunt coons?"

I said, "no sir, I don't.  I am a trapper and I trap furs."  I said, "some people like it and some people don't and the ones that don't need to keep their mouths shut."

You could have heard a pin drop in that elevator.  Finally the door opened and the man walked out.  The young girl in the back who had a smile on her face had her head down and her face was red and she wasn't smiling any more.   I am proud I am a trapper.  It is nothing to be ashamed of.  Thought I'd share the story.

Not trying to beat on this, just sayin' you might be able to change folks mind a little better if you had been a little more professional for the sport. And you are right, I have never had a "run in w/an anti".

You can not change a true anti's way of thinking--no matter how professionally you act. And I do have plenty of experience in that matter.
Sit at a table with several of them for a few hours--it will really open up your eyes.
Trappers are the first ones in line, because our numbers are smaller than those of other groups.Who do you suppose is next in line?

I don’t trap anymore, between old age and arthritics just not as much fun anymore.
But over the years I have run into anti trap, gun and hunting people, and you stand as much chance of changing there minds as they do of changing yours. Most times I simply replied with an old Army saying  , Opinions are like A-holes everyone has one and walk away.

Good for you MDCat. I've tried to be a nice guy about it when approached by antis. When they saw I wasn't to impressed with their BS they started calling me some of the foulest names in the book. I guess I'm not a good christin and didn't turn the other cheek, instead I let them have it. Telling them they were the ones breaking the laws, I was on private property with written permission, they were tresspassing. And that harassment was against the law. They really got flustered when I told them it was the fur industry that got this country started. Gotta love it when a loud mouth has nothing left to say. I just walked away. I still get a chuckle whenever I see their faces. Priceless.

I inform them that trappers help keep their taxes lower by controlling overpopulation resulting in conflicts with humans and/ or our pets or livestock that would cost their counties to hire a trapper
and
Trappers help reduce the diseases from that overpopulation such as rabies, distemper, mange--then I ask them if they have ever seen a raccoon on a sunny hillside-65 degrees day, laying there curled up in a ball shivering-"well I have, it is from distemper, it will die a slow death and go to waste."
and
that gortex coat you are wearing, being made from petroleum,  has left a trail of pollution from the oil field to the store where purchased, and will not biodegrade, and is not a renewable resource, like fur is.

They usually walk away speechless after that and the more people listening the better
I've gotten some nuisance jobs from that speech!!

Well said... ;D...

I never got people. They will shoot a rabbit out of season because it's in their garden,or want the deer shot off becuse it ate their shrub. When it comes to fur/trapping it's voo-doo.I guess that all those grease spots on the roads in the summer time never dawns on them.To me it's a waste of a resource and also means population is high in that area. But what do I know?
