Revolver Cyl. Gap
« on: March 05, 2011, 05:40:45 AM »
I have a revolver with a to tight cyl. gap. After a couple of cyl. of firing it won't rotate until it cools down. Anybody worked on their forcing cone to correct this, and if so how much did you increace the gap? And how did you do the actual work on the cone. Your input is appreciated.

Several possibilities for this little problem. Usually .004 is a minimum to allow function but even that depends on the cylinder face being perpendicular to the axel. What variety of revolver are you talking about? This a factory created problem or has it been altered someway.? Somethis like this is not likely to escape a factory but today one never knows.. Also the DanWessons with the barrel change system used a shim stock strip to set the barrel/cylinder gap..seems to me they used .006??but that's from MY memory and that's a poor thing indeed. If the cylinder is square and the rear of the barrel is sqare to the bore then the barrel can be squared with a pull cutter from the muzzle although this is not the most common tool to find is most shops.. The forcing cone you refer to is actually cut on the inside of the rear of the barrel that projects into the cylinder frame. The tooling used to cut the cone can also pull the facing cutter. Both tools are caliber specific and the amount of B/C gap is very small... This might be a good project to take to a qualified smith..or a trip to the factory if all is original..
