450 Marlin?!?!?!
« on: March 04, 2011, 02:12:27 PM »
Hi All,

I keep seein' NIBs, used and the odd 450M barrel for sale.  I am thinkin' I really NEED one as I don't feel I have the .458 caliber covered very well, just (2) 45/70s and a 45-120. ;)  Anyway, I have studied the load data and the purdy cartridge drawings and all and basically I see this cartridge really gives me nothing new, other than lacking a rim it may have FTF issues?  Since I didn't need the first (3) 45 rifles I think this means I have to have a 450M.  Okay dumb questions, does the Handi 450M have any inherent issues and lacking a shoulder does the cartridge headspace off the case mouth like a 45ACP?

Thanks in advance for your input and don't tell my wife about this, okay? ;D

The 450 marlin is a belted case.  It headspaces off the belt.

Just say "NO". I did. Of course it was to an overpriced Marlin, which if he had come just a little lower.......... The 450 has a belt and headspaces on it. It will not do anything the 45/70 won't, but I would like to have one, if I find a barrel reasonably priced I will take it. I just got a 280 barrel here in a moment of over exuberance, and forgot my first rule of handi-ments--- thou shalt have no shoulders on thy case, nor shalt thou headspace upon it. Only rimmed cases shalt thou use, that thy caselife be long upon the range. Thy reloads shall lockest up firmly, even though thy case is long, and thy bullets seated sloppy. Molds and gaschecks shall follow all your days, and wheelweights shall adorn the floor of thy garage, and thou shalt avoid the bullet sellers who lie in wait for those who worship the "semi's". Thy brass shall always be at hand, and game at thy feet, for who can smite them more mightily than thou, Oh large of caliber, and wide of meplat........
Sorry....... my Rockchucker was talking to me ......again.........
But I transgressed........and now I have to get a small based die for my 243 to resize correctly. It was the first barrel I bought, and shoots excellently, but has a tight chamber---or that is what I get for buying used brass fired in a more generous chamber, and at fairly high pressure. Had I stayed on the path...........

If you want one, you want one...........nothing to do with need.
The factory stuff or equal power reloads will hurt!
The reloads can be tamer just like any 45-70 Govt can be mild to wild.
