Super 16, 45-70 Barrel

Back about 1990??, I got a super 16 in . in 45-70, but it is 16 1/4 long with iron sights, Not ported, just a plain barrel. I just fired it today for the 1 st .time, 12 rds. today,  They were to be smokeless powder but were black powder loads. How in the world do you hold on to these things when they go off and what is a good cast bullet load in it that will not break your hand. Thanks- JOe

     Since we're on the rifle forum, I assume you're shootin' this barrel as a carbine....Ouch!!!  I bought the exact same barrel just about the same time you did and decided to try it first as a carbine.  I loaded up some fairly light 300gr loads and went shootin'.  Of course the 16 1/4" tapered barrel with synthetic stock and forend weighed about nothing.  Long story...short....fired her three times and haven't shot it since...as a carbine.  When my range session was over, I was packin' up and looked at the little carbine laying there and deciced that I just had to try it one time anyway.  So I pulled off the stock...attached pistol grip and let here rip.  My love affair with the 45-70 just began.  I still have that barrel and have added four more to my collection since.   There are bunches of good cast bullet loads available and any that are listed as "trapdoor" loads(the lowest level of three different loadings) are suitable.  I've had good success with several 300gr bullets and some 405's too....just got a 330gr HP Lyman mold(will report on that one soon as I cast a few and do a little shootin').  My favorite load is a soft lead 405 and pure black....YEEOWEE the're FUN!!! ;D ;D ;D

I have a 22" Custom Shop barrel in 45-70 I have tried every possible bullet available to me but I have now settled on only shooting the 325gr Hornady FTX bullets in it now my velocities are appr 1800fps...

I'm taking this combo black bear hunting this spring...   ;D

I got a 45 70 barrel and have spent sometime shooting it in.

Bsa scopes won't work with a leverolution ammo.A few shots and they go crazy.Academy changed the scopes out to a Leopold 3x9 think it will work.Thinking about going back to Remington 405 gr ammo as its much easier on the shoulder and probably work well on 50 yard hogs.Seems like I am headed out to shoot something in all the time.
