CR 45LC -- 454 Casull + Hornady 300 gr FSP
« on: March 02, 2011, 06:04:45 AM »
Hello to all,

at first...a very good place, with nice people... but it makes a little bit  Handi-"hungry". :)
There is a pretty good offer on a CR 45LC (20") and and a sale on some Hornady 454 Casull 300 gr FSP ammo.
If I buy it and ream it to Casull, what can I expect?

In terms of accuracy?
Muzzle velocity?
Oh, hopefully you understand my kind of english, please bear with me :).

regards
stainless

Welcome to the community.

If you have the SB2 frame you can ream the 45 LC to 454. Check your serial number on the frame and compare it with the FAQ section on frame identification. There is a wealth of information in the FAQ and handi 101 section, I consider them a must read and refer myself to them often.

Thanks for the welcome,

I have already read some hours in the forum and also the FAQ. This is the reason why I got the idea to ream the barrel. Quick often mentioned, that the carbine comes on a SB2 reciever. The rifle is nib.

The number on the box will confirm it is a SB2.  I've got a .45 and have thought to ream it to .454 or .460, but haven't done it yet.  I don't know that I need it, with .445 SM, .45-70, 500 S&W and .357 Maximum.  I think there would be a lot of overlap in there.  I think I'm just gonna leave it a Handi .45LC.

I don't know what your good price is, but per advice from Tim (quick), I ordered the .45LC  Buffalo Classic Carbine from CDNN for $229 + $17 shipping. It is a .454 now. Good luck.

I've got a 45 LC and the more I learn about the 45 and handloading the caliber I've not even scratched the surface so I'm not really seeing the need or advantage of reaming it to 454.

Seems there is some loads that approach 44 mag and even 454 now without reaming and if you really need the performance of the 454 there is as someone mentioned the 45-70 that can basically do it all.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Try some really stout Buffalo Bore loads in it first!  The kick will be pretty stout with the butt plate on it.  I'm thinking about a 45-70 barrel for mine, 18 inches or so.

And no chance to get Buffalo Bore ammo  :'(.
You bros are really blessed to have all the options, I can only dream of.

I reamed mine to .454.  Very easy to do.  I got 2000fps with a 300gr Speer in a handload.  Recoil was less than 300gr 45-70 factory loads.  Have not shot it for accuracy yet as my eyes are not what they used to be.  At least not when open sights are involved.  Hope this helps.

It looks like .454 is going to be your best choice then!  I like your attitude!

I was thinking of a 45 colt reamed to 454 but it looks like 45 colt barrels are not on the extra barrel list, is this true if so looks like a 45/70

The 45LC has been out of production since 2008 or 2009, but CDNN likely still has some in stock, it's on page 61 of their current catalog for $229.99, the charge $17 shipping, get one while you can if you want one.

I reamed mine a couple years ago. I find it still shoots 45 Colts very well, but now likes different loads than before.

454s shoot very well. I haven't chronographed any yet. I didn't really want top velocities, the 45 COLT did all I wanted in that regard. Anyhow I and sure 2000K with a 300gr is easily attainable as I was getting near 1800 with the 45 Colt.

Good luck,

So how does the breech pressure compare between the 454/300/2kfps and the 45-70/300/2kfps?

So how does the breech pressure compare between the 454/300/2kfps and the 45-70/300/2kfps?

Ball park? ~5608lbs for the 45-70 at trapdoor pressure~ 25KCUP, 9410lbs using 52KCUP for the 454 which is the average of the pressures in Hodgdon 300gr data, dunno how accurate that is because the pistol barrel velocity may not equal 2000fps in a rifle and their pressure is in CUP, and the calculation for breech pressure in based on PSI,  but you can see the relative difference in pressure of the loads.

Recoil is based on powder and bullet weight, and velocity, powder weight being the determining factor, roughly 30gr powder for the 454 and 50-60gr for the 45-70. http://www.handloads.com/calc/recoil.asp

Quick, it would be better apples to apples to run the calc with each caliber using the 300gr. bullet at 2000fps. Im pretty sure the smaller, more efficient 454 case should be a higher breech pressure and thought in the interest of lower pressures being better for the gun the 45-70 at the same performance level might be a better choice.

I need more data for the 454 to do that, the 45-70 data is accurate and CUP = PSI in the 45-70 at trapdoor levels. This article by Paco shows what pressure it takes to get a 300gr cast bullet close to 2000fps, 300 grain Lyman 191 @ 46CUP = 2110 fps and
300 WFN LBT  @ 49.8CUP = 1960 fps, I suspect he may have reversed those figures tho, that doesn't make sense. But there's no doubt the 454 puts a lot more pressure on the frame than a 45-70 load of equal velocity.

Thanks for all your replies. My initial thought about purchasing a Handi was the 45-70 route, in a Trapper configuration. But this little 45 LC carbine already had a shorter barrel. That was the reason to consider this neat carbine.
Probably the 45-70 is the more versatile way... the price is about the same.
