How went your 2010 season?
« on: February 24, 2011, 01:52:49 PM »
Don't know about you all but what I will remember most about my 2010 upstate NY deer Season experience was that it was being decidedly WET! For awhile there I thought I might have to swap the tires out for some kind of pontoons on the Rhino.  Anyway, muddy as it was a day in the woods beats a day.....well, beats about any day spent not hunting and I did manage to see quite a few deer. As a matter of fact; leastwise going by weight, I can say I shot my biggest (207# dressed) buck to date. He was also my farthest shot  (250 + yards out with my single NEF 308) but,  there is not much I can say about his horns except he had em. Thought I would send along a pic (that's me on the left, with my sweetheart's Dad/hunting buddy on the right).  Pretty unusual rack, and just about everybody who got a look him thought he was the biggest four point they had ever seen.  Which; let me tell you, when I walked up to him as he lay in the field, surprised the heck out of me.  Particularly since I was singing the "I finally killed a Ten Point" song the whole way across haha... Anyway, four point that he is, he is still a nice deer (scored 101 5/8) which; given I came to this blog to see what you guys got - thought I might open up the picture sharing by showing you mine. Cheers!

I had a good season here in northern new york.  I took a 190 pound 8 point on 10/30.  Then the next weekend I filled my 6a dmp. A 117 pound doe.  I passed a rel nice buck during late ml season as I did not need him fo rthe freezer.  I woudl have taken another doe at that point, but , I saw the buck in th eturnips and watched him  and let him walk.

Had a good season in 7j. Lost my father in October, but still managed to go hunting. My brother shot a small buck (wounded by someone else), I shot a small 6 point and a doe. 2 other does taken. Most of our hunting party saw many deer- the buck and doe I shot were the only 2 deer I had much of a shot at this year, although I saw many more.

Nicest part was shooting from stands we put up in clear cuts and other habitat iimprovement areas we have created in the last 15 years.

My son took a 5 point on Thanksgiving day. I took a nice 9 point the last Saturday of late ML saeson in the southern zone. My story about that is here in the hunting in New York forum. We also put a couple doe in the freezer.

Overall sightings seemed to be way down where I hunt 6c,combined with about 9 hunters 4 bucks were taken and 3 doe's. The land we hunt is all managed farm and hardwoods with several nice foodplots, lot's of night pictures of 2 mature bucks 1 10pt,1 8pt and then some smaller ones. Out of nearly 800 acres that nothing less than 3pts on a side has been taken since 2000 those are not that good of a reward. Myself I got a nice 8 that I have seen for 5yrs but until this year he has never been seen (by our party) during hunting season, the first year I saw him (spikehorn)he came in after the season and had been wounded in the shoulder so he lived feeding out of my bird feeder until spring and by then he was able to run again,he returned to the birdfeeder every year afterwards, when we caped him out we could easily see how the shoulder was deformed from the wound, I also got his sheds from 09 which are exact but this year circumference was 1/2" larger. I got him as he came out of 300 acres of heavily hunted state land and into a brothers meadow the last sat. of rifle season at 4pm,and there must have been atleast 30 people in those woods that day, more than likely they walked right past him. But that's ok

That is a dandy buck. And great you have some history with him.  My 9 point of last year  showed up on the same trail cam in 09 & 08 with an identical rack but for more mass and a kicker.

My second season ... and I got nothing. I was sidelined for the first two weeks of Goose season with some kind of gut bug.. then my shoulder went from a sprain to full on frozen shoulder (about 25% range of motion with strength.... about 65% with me using my other arm to move it). So my entire season (sept through about March of this year) was shot :(

But I've mended and am back at about 95% range of motion and am working on strength training... those birds won't get away from me this fall!!!!

Glad to see there are other NY'ers here!

I believe I've seen that discussed before... don't ask me where.. I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old at home.. I tend to forget the important stuff
