Rem. Mod. 722
« on: February 24, 2011, 07:34:48 AM »
Tried this post in bolt rifles but no response.
A friend has a 722 that has a broken stock and he wants me to restock it for him.  I can't seem to find a 722 stock so was wondering if it would  work to use  a model 700 BDL stock and not have to much extra inletting on a 90 percent done stock?
Thanks for your help  Trip

Not very hard just a little fitting around the safety I believe.

Susgest the BDL Short Action stock.  Well require a little fitting.  One example is the 722 barrel has increase in diameter around the barrel where the rear sight is dovetailed.  The 700 stock does not have this.

I tried an old Ramline stock for the 700BDL on my 722; I was not happy with the project and put the orginal wood back on.

The 722 is exactly the same action as the short action M700 but the bottom metal is considerably different. The aluminum, castings used on the 700 have a much deeper inlet than the stamped sheet steel bottom metal used on the 722. Since putting wood back is always harder than removing it I would advise a 700 ADL stock as a starting point. The bottom metal of the 722 is inletted but is considerably shallower than that used for the 700 SA except at the trigger area. There is a spacer used there on the 722.. The parts diagram attached is for a 721 but they are identical other than length. I converted a 721 to use a M700 DBM assembly purchased on EBay for cheap. Careful fitting is required to keep the magazine from rattling but it worked out quite well. The stock was a laminate with extreme lightening done to it.. (not by me). The cut out areas will need stiffening. I'll use fiberglass resin and cloth the reenforce the cutouts.
