Alternate iron sights?
« on: February 23, 2011, 02:34:13 PM »
I just acquired a 30/30 barrel without sights. As it turns out my .223 Superlight has sights that fit the holes, so I put them on the 30/30 for now. Haven't shot the 30/30 yet - brrrrrrr!  :( Too wintry for me to go to the range. (I get wimpy-er as I get old-er.)

Anyway, I thought I read something somewhere on GBO about a different kind of front and rear sight that would fit the Handi barrel... I seem to think it might have been a Remington front that would fit the single hole, but I don't know what would fit the rear holes. I searched the FAQs and got lots of interesting ideas for other things to do ;) but could not find anything on alternative sights. Nor could I find if they are currently available from the factory.

There's an NEF front sight on GunBroker but I don't know what height it is, or what it should be, and which screw it will take. Anyway, I'm kinda bogged down now, so I'm wondering anybody (quick?) recalls this topic, or if anybody has any suggestions for me?

Cheers
Kerry

Kerry,

I recollect the discussion, but whom it was is another matter, knowing the poster helps when using the search function, I'll do some digging and see what I can find. I hear ya on the weather, guess I'm just not as tough (or dumb) as I used to be, I have a couple new rifles that need shooting, just too cold and yucky, stay warm up there!  ;)

Thanks Tim, I appreciate it.

Yeah cold and yucky - we were supposed to get 6" of the white stuff according to last night's weather forecast. Only got about 1" but the dang wind is gusty and howling like crazy, and it's so chilllllly!

Site won't let me post pics as usual... so in words.

Used Rem 700/760 front and rear 'ramps'.  Only single holes in my barrel for each.  Used front hole in ramp for muzzle, either of rear sight holes depending on where you want sight.  I reversed rear 'ramp' to clear scope.  Recontoured sights to barrel, rubbing sight against sandpaper stuck to barrel.  JB weld to bond after cold blue and fill extra holes.  They fit good and high enough, give 'express rifle' look... sorta...

Be Well.

www.skinnersights.com  and here on GBO in the SKINNER SIGHTS FORUM

Just put these on my new 500 S&W Handi.  :)

Front Ramp is .375 wide at the base, 1/4" wide at the top, 3/8" dovetail cut, .250" approx. top of barrel to bottom of DT cut.

Blued steel, 6-48 screws spaced @ .600" apart.

Rear sights are a standard item at Skinner Sights.  Front ramps may be soon.

Nice!
Will the base screw hole location work on factory one hole D/T and, if so, will the barrel hole need to be oversized to 6/48 or will you have the option of the smaller screw sizes?

Front ramp holes were made 6-48 for this rifle, I know some of the rifles only use one screw but am not aware of the screw size or pitch.

I can certainly make them with only one screw hole and sized for the screw pitch already tapped into the barrel.  Will need dimensions for that screw.

I shot mine yesterday with some lighter 500 loads.  (325gr bullet at about 1800 fps) and impact was very low.  I'll increase the load towards maximum and see where impact is before changing sights completely.  With this mild load I would need to build a shorter ramp and shorter front sight for use with our aperture.  The ramp I built was same height as the plastic factory ramp.

Most H&R sighted rifle barrels only have one front sight mount hole, the 500S&W is the only exception that I'm aware of, although I don't know what the slug guns use, H&R uses at least two different sizes, 6-48 and 3-48 are both very common.
