Are .357 and .44 mag rifles on the SB1 frame?
« on: February 21, 2011, 02:37:23 PM »
I see on the H&R/NEF site that .357 and .44 mag rifles can't have other rifle barrels fitted to frames, but can have shotgun and muzzle loader barrels fitted.  Is that because the .357 and .44 mags are on SB1 frames?  If not, is there some other reason?

Also, are the H&R sportsters on SB1 frames?  I've heard that the sportsters have offset barrels to all rimfire firing.  Is that true?

Thanks,

-John

YES, basically they are small firing pin shotgun frames.

NO sportsters are rim fire frames, different from SB1 or SB2 frames.

The only rimfire exception is the versa pack barrels. These are a rim fire that works on a center fire SB 1/2 frame because the chamber is offset.

Sportster frames are SS1, rimfire only.  ;)

Thanks for the quick replies, fellas!

Okay, so that means that there are at least 4 different frames in NEF/H&R rifles and shotguns?

-SB1 large firing pin for shotgun/muzzle loaders only

-SB1 small firing pin for .357/.44 mag/shotgun/muzzle loaders

-SB2 small firing pin for all center fire rifle/shotgun/muzzle loader

-SS1 small firing pin for rimfire only

Am I missing any?

Thanks,

-John

Firing pin sizes are kinda mixed on modern frames, not a good way to tell one from another,  frame material and firing pin location are the big differences, frame material differences can be found in the FAQs. SB1 shotgun/rifle frames come with big and small firing pins. There are also SB2 10ga frames which are made similar to SB2 rifle frames, have larger firing pins, but can be fitted with the much larger 10ga shotgun and 12ga USH barrels that can't be fitted to either SB1 or SB2 rifle frames. And then you have the H&R Inc frames made prior to 1987 which are a horse of a different color entirely!  ;D

Tim;

You mention that I should check out the FAQ.  Which FAQ are you referring to?  I read the one on the NEF website.  Is there another one?  Could you please post a link?

Thanks,

-John
