Neck Sizing for Handi Rounds?
« on: February 21, 2011, 04:43:47 AM »
I have been thinking about getting a neck sizing die for my .223 Rem. Handi.  If it would work okay I know I would probably get better accuracy, cases would last longer, there would be less stretch, and I would no longer have to use all the gunky case lubes required for full-length sizing.  I have read that neck sizing dies should only be used in bolt actions but I never have any trouble extracting fired cases - either my reloads or factory rounds.  What do you think?

If you have been full length sizing up to now that is why you haven't had any problem with extraction. You may not have any with neck sizing either but if you got an ejector that may be another story. Kurt

No need to purchase a "neck size" die. Just back your full length die off a turn. Make a dummy round and see how it works. With this technique you can easily full length size or neck size only. Those fancy bottle neck cartridges will stretch a bit more than the old fashioned straight walled.

I can't say for the Handi, but I use the Lee Collet Neck Dies for my 204 Encore and it did wonders for my groups. It was always right around 1 MOA with FL RCBS dies and now  it's more like 1/2 MOA out to 300 yds...

+1 on the Lee Collet Neck Size Die!
Check with Midway USA, you should be able to buy just the neck die (pt#90954), not the whole set (since you already have a set). I set the collet to hold the bullet firmly when seated, and dont use a crimp.
And you are right, it is a joy not to have to mess with lube.
If cases get a little 'reluctant' to chamber or extract I resize normally a bit at a time to just get rid of the tight spot, then fire for practice to start neck sizing again.
