44 mag overbore

Hi, I am back again about my over bore 44 mag. The bore sluged .432 and it has never been a tack driver. I found a caster that can supply .433 cast. I machined a brass slug .4335 and loaded it in a unsized fired case. The cartridge loaded and ejected with no interference at all. The only problem was the case was sticking in the die, but i could open that a bit. Is this senareo the way to go? A .433 cast gas checked bullet in an unsized case? The weather was great a few days ago and i shot a bunch of hornady 240's with h110 and some lead 240 and trail boss and the accuracy had not improved since the last go. Ideal 60 Thanks for the help.

Unfortunately I don't think anyone has gotten the overbore 44's to shoot good. I had one that would shoot about a 4" group at 100yds. I got rid of it and got a CVA Scout 44mag that'll shoot a ragged hole at 100yds.
The newer 44mag Handi's are said to be great shooters and might be worth taking a look at. You could always sell off your old 44mag barrel to finance a new one.

It has a lot better chance of shooting with the 433's verse the 429's I have a model 25 Smith that will not shoot jacked 452's worth a hoot but it will shoot .456 hollow base lead dead nuts. So give it a shot.

Don't give up on it, .432" cast bullets are one way of getting it to shoot well, rechambering to 445 Supermag is another.

I have an over bored .44 Handi and with the Buffalo Bore 305grs it shoots almost a good as my newer .44mag that shoots everything well.

Lots of luck.  I had an overbore and tried nearly every combination of bullet and powder I could find and nothing worked.  Seriously considered using it as a tomato stake but sold it to someone who  I think re bored it to 445.  Later I got one of the 'new' 44 barrels and it is a great shooter.  The new barrel and my old 45/70 are the only barrels that I have had that didn't have something or other wrong with them.  I killed a 20 point sprout this deer season with the 45/70.  Stopped it like it was rooted in the ground.

How does the Super Mag 445 clean up a sloppy bore?  Would you please elaborate?

I'm interested in the .445SM, to rechamber a .44M barrel to, then put into 'Survivor' plastic [Choate], but the specs and diagrams I've studied show a straight-walled 1.605" long big sister to the cartridges .44M and .44 Special with the same rim, web, web dia., neck dia., etc., etc.  THANKS!

I suspect bullet obturation may play a part in why the overbore 445SMs shoot good when the same bullets didn't in the same barrel as a 44mag, but the biggest factor is the slow 1:38" twist of the 44mag, the increased velocity of the 445SM helps.

I have run out of 265gr. Beartooth bullets and haven't ordered any more, so I decided to give some 270gr. Speer Gold Dots a try since I use them in my .44mag Super Blackhawk.

They shot better than the Beartooths at 50 and 100 yards!!!! (I didn't take any pics - sorry)

Now, for those who have forgotten, I have one of the "large bore" handi's with a .432 sized bore.  The gold dots are sized at .4295.

I suppose the greater pressure with the added case capacity of the 445sm gives them enough umph to bump up to fill the bore.

I also tried a few .44 mag loads with the gold dots and got some nice groups at 50 yards.

Looks like I now have a bullet that I can use in the 445 and my 44.

Yes, a lead bullet that fits the fully fire-formed case neck and still chambers and extracts easily is much more likely to shoot to the barrels ability.
A marginal twist rate for a given bullet length and weight sometimes can be prompted to stabilize better with more velocity, as long as you dont exceed the proper chamber pressure and your recoil tolerance. Sometimes a better approach is to go to a bit shorter and lighter bullet rather than try to make that velocity increase.
