Rechamber questions
« on: February 18, 2011, 12:04:57 PM »
Hi All,

Almost decided on my spring rechambering.  My 45-70 22" substitute-BPCR is going to 45-90 and my 308x444 wildcat is going to 30-06 AI. The last decision is regarding my 24" 223 1:9 twist.  I am leaning towards going with 220 Swift and my questions are:

1.  how big a bullet will this shoot, 75, 80 grain?

2.  any potential issues, not too concerned about rapid barrel wear because I intend to shoot heavy for caliber bullets and not the little fellows.

3.  Anybody out in Handiland have this rechamber and care to tell me how it performs?

thanks

BB

The 220 isn't designed as a heavy bullet caliber... IMHO a fast twist 223 is better... The 1;9 twist will help this but how well is to be determined. It will likely shoot 60gr well enough, maybe the blunt 60g better yet.

The 308/444 is a rimmed cartridge, the 30-06AI isn't.

Plenty of case capacity. Rate of twist should stabilize the bullets. Would have to seat them deep to avoid contact with the rifling unless you account for that in the rechamber. Figure muzzle velocity around 3150 for the 75 grain and less as you went heavier. Why not?

then watch what happens to the bullet.... see if you can find it !!!! muchless see were it goes.
it don't work like my 1950 stevens springer savage, it will do a 60gr up to 4k.
also have #1 that we custom built that will do the same.
but the handi's like the small pills. 1:9 or 1:12 when travlin over 4K.
if you feel fine with under that... why even rechamber !!!!

well. i spent over 7 months an tons of coins try'n to perfect both my handi swifts 1:9/1:12
to perform like my other swifts.... from 35-70gr bullets of all different styles and flavors.
over 7 different propellents and many col's.
only the 38-42gr bullets would do tha velocity and accuracy i was look'n for from my other rifles.
book info was trash !!! so i relied on the piezo transducer for chamber pressures.
got really close a couple times too !!! ;D, but no where near tha limit of the #1 or tha springer.
did finally produce a "swift" accurate formula. wif tha 40gr @ 4355 fps
we named it tha "light'n bolt"  cus that was tha effect when ya pulled on tha trigger real gud.
itsa thrill ta shoot, and watch them kiyots roll only thru a spotter or scope.
naked eye can't see the real story ;D
i'd getta pitcher of tha light'n bolt ifin i can find tha right folder  :'(

Doc,

Wasn't thinking of trying to push a heavier bullet at 4K plus, more along the lines of adding 300 or 400 FPS to a 60  grain Sierra Varminter.  The barrel I am considering the rechamber will shoot 3/4 inch @ 100 yards with this bullet at about 3K FPS so was hoping to get 3,300 or 3,400 FPS with the same bullet.  Also wanted to play with the 69 Sierra HPBTs, but the 60 Varminter is my favorite.  BTW, on the loads the got "close" who pulled the trigger, you or J2? :o

CW,

I know the 06AI is rimless but the current chamber is a problem and needs reworked.  I think it should be fine with a rimless cartridge in a chamber with a rimcut.  Going to do a little experiment with a cutdown and resized standard 30-06 brass first to make sure before I rechamber.

I appreciate everyone's input and I enjoy learning from others experience.

Biker, I use the 60 gr Sierra bullet in my 22 CHeetah. It stays together and shoots extremely well at 4000 fps. My barrel is a 1-10 but I would bet the Sierra will work fine in your Swift project.
Good luck with your project

I know when I did the 225Winchester in the 1-9 I could not get the light bullets to do 4000 which is why I built it .It would shoot heavy bullets fine but only in the 3300-3500 range so I let it go now I got the 22-250AI in a 1-9 that I hope to get to 4000 with shootin 50gr + bullets. There are at least 2 220Swifts on here just can't remember at the moment who they were. Greg may be one. Kurt

Doc,

That is a very prudy shootin' iron!  I would be careful lettin' that Russel in the test cell.  Smart little bugger like that will be loadin' the gun and pullin' the trigger before you know it. ;)  BTW, I would love to see a pic of your Jack, with or w/o his ear muffs and shootin' glasses. ;D
