Got my deer this morning!!!
« on: December 20, 2003, 09:27:02 AM »
I finally filled my Iowa late season tag this morning.  I decided that I was strictly stand hunting this year.  It took a while, but two yearlings came in to the stand this morning, I shot both of them, one for me and one for the farmer who was sitting a couple hundred yards away.  I took them with my TC Encore in .454 Casull, and it did a wonderful job.  These are my first deer ever with a pistol!  From this experience I have learned two things:  One, a 320 gr. bullet with 27 gr. of H110 is WWWAAAAYYYY overkill for whitetails, I'm going with my 300 gr. Keith and 14 gr. of Unique next fall.  Number two, I should have bought a 2x scope for my pistol instead of a 4x, it's almost two much, and they were only 40 yds. away, although it made shot placement a snap, both were shot through the heart.  I shot the first, she made it about 15 yds, then the other one stood around wondering what had happened to her, I reloaded and shot her in the same place, she piled up about 15 yds away.  The nice thing that I noticed after skinning them is that there is no blood-shot meat, I'll be able to eat right up to the hole, unlike the .308 and .30-06 that I've shot deer with before.  If any one wonders how the .454 does on whitetails, I think it does great!

If they would just line up the right way you could have saved a bullet  Good job. Happy eating.

Selmer,
That second deer must have been in shock from the muzzle blast from that handcannon of yours!  Congrats on the shooting.  I've never taken two deer on the same day, that's quite a start to you handgunning career.

Congradulations and thanks for the info on the 454 out of the Encore. You don't hear a lot about this round except from revolvers.

I think that this would be great in those situations where you have to use a straight wall case like Iowa.

Way to go Selmer.  A double with a handgun!!  That's great.  Only double I've ever done was on deer with a 338 so I'm sure not gonna call you overgunned.  That's gonna be some sweet eatin'
