I have been thinking about a .405 win handi. Is this possible? My idea would take a 24" 223 bull barrel, have it rebored and rechambered. Any and all opinions would be appreciated.

Our moderator Tim (quick) has one. He had made by one of our sponcers from a 38-55 IIRC. He will post up shortly be assured!!

Go for it!! As CW said, mine was a 28" 38-55, bought new and taken directly to our favorite Handi smith and site sponsor Wayne York of Oregunsmithing to be rebored and chambered to 405 Win, I get ~2500fps with 300gr Hornady SPs with Benchmark and 1 hole accuracy at 100yds, almost as good with factory ammo. Plan on spending ~$350 for the work.

Ruger makes a .405 in their Ruger #1 so that would be another option.

Tis true about the #1 in 405Win, but even with the rebore it will cost twice as much as the Handi and not be near as pruddy.

And neither, is as purrdy as my Win 1885 HighWall 405, or my 45-70 HighWall either!
Even got a 405 Encore, but Encores ain't purddy.
One day I may spring the $$$ and have one of my 38-55s done like Tims.

I checked with Mr. York and he said he would not be able to bore the barrel to .411. I'm going to check some other gunsmith websites to see what's available. Maybe the Ruger #1 might be the thing.

The last time I was at Whittaker's (Whittakerguns.com) they had a used Encore (blued/synthetic) in 405 Winchester. $499 was the asking price I believe. Rather light for the caliber, but otherwise was quite nice. Give them a call to see if its still on their shelf.

I have a 405 Encore and i like it because you have the option of plinking with lead pistol bullets or going full power. It would be great in a Handi.

...and encores can be prettier than the factory offering....

With an H&R purchase, then the work and the shipping I am inclined to think you could come awfully close to buying the R No1 and have a more substantial platform for that cartridge potential.
Ive been seeing some attractive No1 prices on the 'big bores' that say things like ,"1/2 box ammo through it" (too hot for that original buyer!). I know I would be loading it down for my pleasure and a few full loads in reserve for errant Buicks.

Yeah, it's big bucks but when you consider the cost to overhaul a Handi or Target Classic, or maybe buy a Ruger #1 etc, it might be worth the extra few bucks to have a repeater. How fun would that be?

Very fun as a matter of fact!

My Dad left me three '95's. One each of the 30-40, 405 and 30-06 calibers. All are fine rifles but the 30-40 has been re-barreled at some time. He picked them up when folks were getting rid of the old lever guns and going to bolts. The lever guns made much better saddle rifles and these were much more powerful than the '94's they replaced. The 94's languished in the gun cabinets till I got interested in shooting them.

The 405 has substantial recoil but is very manageable and is a great brush rifle. Being something of an oddity to most hunters it has a certain "wow" factor going for it. When taken to the range you better take extra ammo as a lot of older shooters want to give it a try.

As far as knock down goes the BC in 45-70 will outshine the 405 and a BC taken out to 45-120 would have way more going for it IMO.

If the purpose of the project is simply to have a 405 then I'd sure not discourage finding a '95 in this calibre. It's fun to shoot and a treat to own.

Tim, Wayne York said the 405 bullets would not stabilize in his rifle bore because his bore is 405/406 and the groove depth is .413. JES does them but he does 3,4 or 5 groove. What does that mean?

I have had Jesse do a few(3) rebores. He does a good job. 3,4 or 5 groove, means that you can have a choice of 3groove rifling (rifling spaced 120 degrees apart, 4 groove is 4 lands/grooves-90 degrees apart or 5 groove--72degrees spacing on the rifling--kind of like the Enfield rifles)

He used to do only 3 groove, which does well in my Re-bored Pedersoli Sharps Clone in 50 Alaskan, but has branched out to other rifling spacing. Thinking about sending a barrel to him to make a 40-65 Handi as I have a 405 Ruger.

Call and ask him about turnaround time. Sometimes, he has had a rifle back to me in less than 10 days.

I have one. Took A shotgun bl. cut off put a match bl. blank on. Gave $20.00 for the shotgun bl. and $120 for the 405 blank. Worked out fine, everything fit right off.

To my knowledge the '95 Winchester was never chambered for the 38-40. The 30-40 round was originally, AFAIK, developed for the military as the 30GVT and issued in the Krag rifle. It served from, I think, 1893 till the adoption of the '06.

Commonly called the 30-40 Krag it's about midway between the 30-30 and the 308. I've also seen headstamps on cartridges 30 Army and 30USA which adds a bit of confusion with the 30-03 and 30-06 cartridges. Fortunately the Krag rounds wont chamber in either of the others nor they in the Krag chamber.

The round makes an excellent scabbard round in the model '95 as it's flat sides and mild recoil give a boost over the 30-30 while not being as punishing in report or recoil as the 405 or '06.

One of these days I'm going to have a Handy made up in this caliber. I think this cartridge would be a great addition to any stable as it's easy to load down for the young shooter and handles 220 grain slugs with authority for heavy brush. It's easy to load for and even with the lever gun I just neck size. Brass stretch is minimal which gives very long life.

But I ramble, sorry.

It isnt so much the 30-40 K caliber that can handle the 220gr projectiles as the twist that was specified so it could handle the heavies, though that said, the bit bigger capacity case can hold more powder that the 30-30 to get it to perform. The military did find the 1:12 twist was the more accurate (IIRC) with under 200 gr.ers,but they wanted the 220 then in a 1:10. Later they decided to go lighter with the '06, and we all know where that lead.

Sorry, I read that wrong.....thought he wrote 38-40, not 30-40. I know what the 30-40 Krag is, for sure!

I kinda thought it was odd to have the 1895 in that caliber (38-40) being so short and low powered.

Depends on the rifle, bullet and load. This will give you some idea by plugging in some appropriate numbers.

I talked to Wayne, he still does 405 Win rebores, he told you that it wouldn't work with your .406" bullets which it won't, those are for a 40-65 Winchester or the like, I figured there were some facts not discussed here, mine shoots excellent, the target below was shot at 100yds with Hornady factory ammo on its first range trip.
