Just got my rifle back with a .308win barrel. Now I have probs
« on: February 14, 2011, 10:48:11 AM »

Here goes post #1!

Sent my varmint .223rem in for a .308win barrel.  Now that I have it back from the factory, it does not feel right.  the action is really stiff when you break it open.  releasing the action it only opens about a 1/4 inch.  I have to really push down on the barrel to get it to open all the way.  I loaded a round in and it would not latch shut unless I really slammed it shut.  When I fired the round the action popped opened on it's own.  When I pressed down on the barrel the spent brass would not eject, but it did extract.

I have several NEF's with accessory barrels and this is the only one with this problem.

Is there something I should look for or should I just return to the factory to get it services?

Thanks.

Kent

Sounds like someone at the factory quit just short of a good job......take the fore stock off, and see if it closes better.  The stiffness you describe is usually a tight for end.  If it closes and opens well, shoot it with the fore end off, and see if it comes unlatched.  (Be careful and don't let the barrel fall off if it does.)

I usually remove the spacer and remove just a little material at the time from the flat surface.  I usually sand the spacer, as it's cheaper to replace than the fore stock if you get an oops.

If the barrel is tight with the forestock removed...I would send it back.

Also, check to make sure your old 223 barrel still work correctly.
Would hate for that one to not work correctly either.

FYI the Handi c/f rifles are no longer made with ejectors, only extractors.

did you send your forend and stock in with your receiver ?
is tha .308 barrel you purchased a heavy (bull) barrel ?
if you did not send in your forend.... you might need ta open up tha barrel channel.
when you get it to open... look at tha forend spacer and see if its ina bind.

Yes I sent the fore end in with the rife.
It is a bull barrel 308.

The fore end is very hard to remove.  It really needs to have the barrel channel opened up.  It looks like the fore end screw post is all the way to the rear against the hole in the fore end.

With the fore end removed it there is no resistance and the action move freely.  It still does not latch shut securely even with the fore end removed.

I would call for a return number with postage paid authorization and send it back. That is just not acceptable.

Well, its close, and you could probably fix it yourself, but you did pay for it to be fitted and somebody just threw it together. They need to know regardless and find out who to train.
If you choose to final fit it on your own you will get the straight scoop here on doing it.

The forend screw hole can be moved a little with a 3/8 drill bit, just move it so it only takes off a little off the back of the hole. I had to do that a couple of times with swapping forends.

Opened up the hole in the fore end with a small sanding drum on the dremel.   Fixed all of the problems.  thanks for the great advice and the steer to the FAQ's!

This website is great. These guys have had NEF's for so long that collectively, they probably know more about these rifles than HR1871 does.
SB1 and SB2 receivers
.223 bull barrel with scope rail
12, 20, and .410 gauge smooth bore barrels
(next on wish list: .357 and .44 mag barrels)
