round nose bullets in tubular magazine?
« on: February 12, 2011, 06:26:19 AM »
i was given a box of 150 gr Hornady RN jacketed bullets. In my Midway catalog i noticed that hornady lists these as 30-30 bullets but noticed that the bullet nose isn't flat ::)....so got to wonderin a little about magazine detonation. Have any of you guys used these in your Marlin or Winchester lever guns?

thanks for the info. Even tho Hornady lists them as 30-30 bullets, the nose shape gave me the "willies" enough to want to hear from somebody that's "been there, done that" ;)

Years ago all 30-30 store bought stuff was round nose.  I didn't see flat nose until we started loading in the mid-late 60's.

There have probably been more Remington Core-Lokt bullets run through the old 30-30 than anything and they are a round nose.
Load'em up and go shoot something! ;D

I shoot the Hornady 150-grain RN out of my 30-30 Marlin.

Bottom group is six handloaded Hornaday 150-grain RN at 100 yards.  Top group is Hornady factory LeveRelution at 100 yards.  High round was my doing with the LeverRelution.

If it bothers you take a file to them. Just like the other guys I have used RN for many years in my levers with no ill effects.

A second and two or three passes with a file will flatten them so you don't have to worry.  I do this with 22LR bullets too. NOT for the same reasons, the larger meplat I create increases effectiveness.
