Need help Mossberg 195
« on: February 10, 2011, 03:16:31 PM »
I know that this isnt a handi question, however this forum seems to have the most following and some savvy folks.
If quick needs to move\delete this post I understand.

I have a mossberg 195 that I have been shooting slugs out of with great accuracy. I would like to mount a scope/red dot to this gun .
I need to know if there is any way to mount a scope base using the 3/8 dovetail allready on the gun . I dont want to d/t the gun , because  I only paid $ 15.00 for it in the first place .
I would like to thank my grand father
for a man that couldnt read or write he
taught me so much and forgot more than I
will ever know

What kind of dovetail does it have? Is it grooved like a 22? My brother collects those guns and I've never seen a dovetail on any of them. Do you have any pics?

I dont have any pics , the gun originally had a solid raised blank that acted as a fake rear sight. it has a 3/8 dovetail on the very front reciever ring just before where the barrel and receiver meet . I put a set of rear rifle sights from .22 on it and just using the original front bead , I could get 5 shot groups about the size of a soft ball @ 50 yds . The only problem with the set up is that it is very hard to see .

clean both the receiver and a scope rail real good and JB weld the rail in place (any other epoxy may work) when you want to remove the scope rail simply heat it up and pull it off. a heat gun will work fine not enough heat required to damage gun finish.
the nation that forgets it defenders will itself be forgotten

Sounds like he has a 3/8 dovetail notch cut into the barrel for a rear sight, not a 3/8 tip-up scope rail like on a 22 rimfire.

The only scope mount that will work on that bolt action M195 is a Weaver side mount. Drill and tapping is required. Finding the scope mount will be fun. There may be others made for the Mossberg, but they will be like looking for rockin horse road apples. What idiot would sell a bolt action Mossberg shotgun for $15. I'd have to know the person before I bought it. That's five finger discount pricing. They had black walnut stocks in that era, too. ::)

the guy walked into the gun shop that you can usually find me at . He said that the gun was shooting about 2ft low . Said that he would take what ever he could get for it . $15 was what I had in my pocket .
