With all the talk about Classics I went and bought me one.
Now the question remains to scope or peep it.
My front sight is .65 high from center of bore.
I have checked the FAQ's and know there is disparrity in getting the front sight right.
Has anyone had any luck using a peep with the standard front sight?

Got a scope on mine, have never tried peep sight thought I might someday.

I just got my Skinner barrel mounted dovetail sight in the mail this afternoon and installed it in less than five minutes, so I'll have to see how it performs.

The sight is adjustable for elevation by backing out the screw in aperture and drifting the sight in the dovetail for windage.

Mounted it looks about right where the original sight was set without doing a thing to it so now it's just a matter of shooting it to see where she hits.

The sight is really well made and looks like it belongs on the classic which is what I wanted!

I went with the Skinner Lo-Pro peep sight on mine. It screws into one of the scope mount holes and works great with the stock front sight. The only disadvantage is having to drift the front sight for adjustments of windage. It looks great too!

I tried a Williams FP peep with the standard front sight and it was way off, not even close to being tall enough so I bought a Lyman #20 globe sight and it worked perfect with the peep sight.

I had thought about going with the low peep also with the Skinner sight, but If I decide to install a scope the sight would have to go, and with the barrel mounted dovetail sight you can pull the scope off should something happen to it, and the barrel mounted sight will be ready to use and sighted in.

I fitted the scope and rail on mine with the original buckhorn sight and the sight sticks up too high to clear the scope so you would have to remove it for mounting a scope.

With the Skinner it clears it just fine! Might be something to consider also!

my solution to a back up sight......

is also a backup firing pin...hammer...spring set....ect

yes it is a complete back up gun...just have to hike back to camp

Im guessing the scope bell hit the buckhorn sight? Simple solution is to use a scope of low power, which is just fine for the caliber, that has a straight front (no bell). Then the only question is, can you actually see the sights looking over the installed scope rail, or does it need to come off?

The buckhorn sight will hit the scope of a 4 x 32, but a straight front shotgun type scope would work with no problem.

You can see the sights with a scope rail installed if you take off the scope. I've not used see through scope mounts so I don't know if they would work, but I assume they may.

I hate see-throughs, though some may like them; you have to get your head way up off the comb to look through the scope, ackward at best, and unstable (and ugly) on such a handsome rifle.
But thats just me..........

that is exactly my opinion of then too

besides...i can find the target quicker in the scope....if it fits right
then i can find the target ''hidding'' under the scope......then to line up the 2 sights

also.....a stock is either designed for a scope or sights....or it just don't fit right

I just got a .45 Classic and had it reamed to .454. I had the sight replaced to a Marbles Bullseye Peep, per advice here. I have not shot it yet. Good luck.

Your scope bases often block seeing the rear sight with the scope off so removeing the base may be needed for real sight back-up

Hi. I would have to say, it would depend on if you carry the weapon when hunting , or if you shoot targets. The balance point of the weapon is different when scoped or not. Also it depends on the type of hunting you do, I prefer to still hunt, and a scope just does not work for me. For woods carry I have always used peep sights. To date the BEST peep sights for the MONEY are made by Skinner Sights!! michstew

I've still hunted most of my life, about 50 some years, a low power scope works just fine, works even better in the latter part of that time......think CQB!!

As usual, if you hang around here long enough you'll find that Tim is spot on!

I bought the 45 LC hoping to maybe not having to scope it, but the difference turned out to be either a fist sized group at fifty yards versus a one inch group at fifty yards so guess which route I've decided to take?

Only took me one evening to figure it out!......Two missed pigs and only one coyote at forty yards later, I've decided the scope is going to have to stay for these old and tired eyes of mine.

I use the old Simmons 1 1/2 x 5 x 20 Pro Diamond shotgun scope on my levers. I am not sure that they are still available, but for under $100, it is small and very rugged.

Nodak Spud makes a really nice peep for the Handi. It would look great on the Classic. The Marbles definitely has a more traditional look which may be better suited to the overall classic look of the platform.

Optics or peep is really a matter of user's choise, but one of those two peeps would be my 'vote' on the gun in question.

Sometimes age makes the decision making process easy, huh?

I'm 37 and know that my time is coming where I'll HAVE to use a scope so I'm making sure I enjoy every bit of my last years of shooting iron sights. I friend of mine actually talked me into scoping a rifle a few years ago. I bought a Leupold 2-7. At the max range I take my shots at (75 yards) my group sizes actually stayed the same shooting with a scope so I took it off and haven't used one since.

You are lucky to be able to use irons!

Figured I'd give it one more try but it ain't gonna happen!

My 45 LC with the cheap 4 x 32 will shoot 1" high at 50 yards 1" group and under, and at 100 yards it's 2" low grouping 1" with my reloads and a 300 grain XTP bullet.

I'll have to just learn to live with the fact I can't see good enough to use irons anymore!....Oh well!

I do agree with Tim, CQB sights are very good indeed, but on the norm, a quick, well aimed shot with a peep sight is alway's a winner. Just have to do some target work with your weapon. Most battle rifle's have a peep rear sight and a blade front sight. When in the Marine's, target practice was the key to shooting! VietNam 1971 3rd Marines First MP's DaNang. If you have the time, a scoped shot is a winner. With all the different combo's now, it is a matter of choice. Use what work's for you. michstew

We have another fact that I have to deal with, we have antler restrictions on all deer and elk hunting here, some are spike or better, most are two or three point or better, last year I had an additional deer tag for an anterless deer, so the scope makes a much better tool for the making sure you're shooting a legal animal.

Peeps are my second choice, we can't use optics during muzzleloader seasons, so mine have the WGRS ghost or Twilight aperture and fiber optic front, also have a fiber optic peep and front sight on my TDC turkey gun.

Tim did you get to visit the leper colony at Marble.I was there in 66 and still in country for Tet 68 in Hue.1st Force Recon Co. 1st MarDiv
