stripped scope base screw hole in Contender barrel....
« on: February 08, 2011, 03:15:18 AM »
Had sold a Super 14 barrel in 30/30 Ackley Improved. Got the scope base off that had been on when I purchased the used barrel to find a screw hole stripped.
What's the drill [literally : ) ], drill and tap to size 8 screws? Doesn't SSK start out with #8 screws in their barrels?
Probably will improve the base strength at that, right?

I had the same problem with a Contender Barrel I bought one time. Turns out Brownells sells what they call an oversized 6x48TPI Screws & Tap. These are ever so slightly larger than a 6x48 TPI screw that redrilling is not required. I just tapped the hole and inserted the new oversize 6x48 TPI Screws and it was good as new.

I had that Contender Barrel rechambered to .30-30 AI and shot it for several years without an issue.

Yes #8 is a stronger screw.

I had a herrett that sheared off the smaller 6s. I replaced themwith 8's and epoxy and problems dissapered.
