Marlin 1894C Feed Issues
« on: February 08, 2011, 02:03:17 AM »
Santa Claus brought me a brand new Marlin 1894C.  The action is stiff, but working in nicely.  I've been having feed issues with various types of factory ammo, both .357M 158gr JSP and .38SPL 130gr FMJ.  I also handloaded some .357M with Hornady 158gr XTP.

The problem is the cartridges do not chamber properly, and need a little coaxing.  I checked the COAL on all cartridges and they are within spec according to the Marlin manual.  My handloads are 1.590"

Everything is tight, clean, lubed, etc.  It shoots well... but this feed issue is irritating.  Suggestions?

I'd probably shoot it a little more and see if it will shoot in. Try 158gr Remington SP. They worked good in the ones I've owned. Semi-wadcutter and lite or heavy for caliber seem to give feeding problems in these guns. If it won't feed acceptably with the standard 158gr 357 mag loads I'd call Remington and follow their recommendations.  ;D

It's getting better....

I seated the bullets a tad more and that seems to have helped.  1.580" COAL

I really don't want to send it back... so we'll see.

If you want to shoot cartridges with a longer OAL, there's a simple mod that can be done to the carrier assembly.  It involves removing about .010" or so from the area where the cartridge rim contacts it, if you want I can send you the link with step by step instructions along with photos. I did this to my first 1894 and it's quite simple.
Another thing to try is bending out the spring on the ejector. I had to do that on my replacement 1894, it's very simple.
I hope these tips help out.

I had the same problem with my .44mag 1894. I sent it back to Marlin and they polished up the chamber throat. Works great now. I have heard of many having this very issue. Shame that Marlin cannot seem to get it right the first time.
