Today I looked at a 'Remington/Baikl/Spartan over-under 30-06... it was neat, has anyone ever had any experience with one? I have read in the past that any 'double rifle' is a 'bear' to sight in.. this one claims to have some sort of unique screw to do that with. I put this inquiry in the single-shot thread because I didn't know where else to ask about this rifle... Bob

Hey Bob,

I had a Baikal IZH-94 12/30-06 combo and Spartan 12/223. Neither had any adjustments for windage but you could use a shim of varing sizes to adjust the elevation.

The Spartan was regulated fine but the Spartan shot the rifle 6 inches to the right and 4 inches high (I beleive I am remembering correctly). The problem was the Spartan could not be regulated by the importer for Remington (EAA in Fl).

If you have an opportunity to shoot the gun or to put laser bore sighters in both barrels that would give you an idea on how the barrels were regulated.

Net Net I would want to know how the barrels are regulated prior to purchasing any Baikal/Spartan combo or double rifle.

I passed on it... probably kick myself later, I do a lot of that... I saw it at a gun show in Fla., there were 2 there, one scoped was at $600... the other one was $375... might have gotten it in the low to mid 300 range... anyhow, I went back and looked closer, it was a bit heavy, ( I want a hunting rifle..) but what turned me off most was the short dovetail on top,back part of reciever... it would take rings like from a .22 or something like that... Then I talked to a guy there, (another shopper) and he said he had one like it only a single shot in 308..and scope mounting was a major challange because of the short dovetail.. he ended up have a friend custom make rings from some factory Ruger rings.. they had to be machined. The guy with the scoped one said he gets 3" groups with his at 100yds ( 1 shot from each bbl) I wasn't allowed to pull a trigger on either, (can't blame them..) but heard that they are in the 5# range... I'll save for a better double... Bob

The trigger pull on the Baikal was around 8 lbs. The scope mount was never an issue with me. I used the dovetail for the 22 and never had an issue and i was using 3 inch buck and turkey shot. Needless to say the issue with those guns is barrel regulation.

Great little rifles but a tad heavy and bulky to carry around. Owned a couple and all were very accurate and easy to dial in. Easy to add a scope to them as well.
Pymarid air sells a nice scope mount for air rifles that clamps on the base. Think it fit 12mm base??? Used these mounts on the 06 and 45-70 doubles and they are rock solid.

You should of bought it, the last O/U I sold went for for over $600 and that was without a scope.

I have one foot shorter than the other from kicking myself after gun shows are over !! If I had it to do over, I should have bought it, if nothing else, just to have. ..VOILA.. I went to another show, and there it was...same one... got it for $300 !! The guy had the original box, and owners manual.. in the back they show a drawing of the regulation, but don't tell how it works.. I hope to mess with it as little as possible. Am looking for a good set of scope mounts... thanks to all.. Bob

If you put a scope on it, make sure it's a shotgun or muzzleloader scope with a long eye relief. Otherwise you will probably get a ring around the eye when you fire the shotgun. By the way my Baikal IZH-94 12 ga over 30-06 does cloverleafs at a hundred yards with 110 grain v-max reloads. The shotgun regulates at 50 yards with #4 buckshot. Great gun. Glad I have it and it's my go to rifle for coyote hunting. The screw adjustment between the barrels is not an adjustment. It's there to hold the spacer between the barrels that regulates the two barrels elevation. If you find the regulation is off, send me an email and I'll tell you how to make it work.

OB One is right about the long eye relief.

I have used the following scopes on my combo guns using 3 inch buck or BB along with the associate rifle caliber without issue.

Mueller Hybrid 3-9x40 long eye relief
Leupold VX-3 2.5-8x32 VX-1 2-7x28
Zeiss Conquest 1.8-5.5x42, 2.5-8x32, 3-9x40

I put a 'beater' simmons 3x9 on it to see how it looked. I used 'beater' rim-fire, 1" rings, and it looks pretty nice, eye relief feels and looks ok, I am limited to where I can mount the scope, any scope, there is very little room for movement in the rings. The dovetail that the rings clamp into is very short. I only have about a quarter inch to play with. The rings I have on it are weaver, aluminum, standard 1" rings.. base is alum. and ring is steel. If they were shorter, from front to back, I imagine I would have more room to play with. I see some scopes have the turrets further back on the tube than others... we'll see how this works out, I have to wait until mid April to shoot it, there are no decent ranges here in central Fla.. I got a chance to shoot the rifle today... some surprises !! first the good news.. top barrel shoots 1" groups with factory Remington cor-loct 150's.... bottom barrel shoots 1.25" groups with the same ammo .... now the bad news, the bottom barrel shoots its groups 5" high and 5" right of the top barrel... OB are you there?? what do I do? There is some sort of 'gizmo' at the end of the forarm between the barrels, there is a screw adjustment ( I think..) is this the regulater?? The triggers are OK.. front trigger(bottom bbl) feels lighter than the back trigger....Bob

I don't know, but I have seen worse, I used Leupold 'Rifleman' .22 rings.. I guess they must be 11mm, because they fit nice. I have a fairly heavy 3x9x44 scope on it and it didn't seem to move, as I said, it was more accurate than I would have guessed. But, for what I want to use it for, (a Wyoming hunting rifle..) I have on my hands is a 9# single shot... (what good is second shot at 5" high, and 5" right) ( that would be 10" high and 10" right at 200?? etc., etc. ) For a 'woods rifle' it might be just right, here in Wisc., its rare to shoot over 75 yds. So, I will have to give it some thought as to whether I keep it or not. Bob

B-Square made an 11 mm dove tail which worked great on m y Baikal IZH-94 combo 12/30-06.

What weight bullets are you using. I believe my Baikal liked the 150 gr the best.

If its anything like my Remington SxS 45-70 from the same maker, you can regulate the barrel. On my SxS, the right barrel is fixed, and the left floated. You sight in the right barrel using the sights, then turn the jack screw (adjusting screw) to bring the left barrel into alignment.

I would not be surprised if the O/U is the same. You should try using that adjusting screw, and see what it does - it wont adjust itself. Once you bring the elevation in line with the primary barrel, there should be a small gap in the front barrel shroud of the floated barrel where you can experiment with placing brass shims of varying thicknesses to adjust windage.

The screw we are talking about just holds a bushing thats a spacer between the barrels. Fire it several times and get a general measurement of where the barrels are out of regulation. Take the bushing out from between the barrels and send it off to EAA with your measurements. They will figure it out and mill one the correct diameter for you. I suggest you call them first and get the price and mailing address. Good luck and enjoy your new rifle. You got it at a great price.

Thanks OB... I will get to trying it again soon. For what its worth, I used Remington factory corlocts 150gr. PSP... I have another rifle, a bolt 30-06, and the same ammo shoots 1moa in it, then I tried some WW Powermax bonded 150gr., and groups were sub-moa in that bolt rifle !! If I had these ammo's 35 years ago, I never would have started reloading... I did it then for accuracy, but todays 'cheapy' ammo shoots great. Bob

I'm awful late to this thread but wouldn't it be worth trying some different brands and bullet weights before fiddling with the barrel regulation? If you reload it should be even easier. I know trial and error could go on for ever, but a few tries before spending a lot of money on tweaking the barrels would seem worthwhile to me.
