Lug bedding on the cheap?
« on: February 04, 2011, 04:55:23 PM »
I have had the plan to float the forend on my handi to see how it shoots.  Then I had the idea to float out past the lug, and thought about bedding from the lug back.  I also planned to do basically the same thing on a CVA muzzleloader that I have.  I was wondering if there is a "cheap" way to bed just the lug area on a synthetic stock,  and if there is other things I can use to bed it with other than bedding glass.

Thank you
Levi

Check out the FAQ sticky at the top of the forum. Look for "RTV Bedding".
I've used regular 2 part epoxy before and had great results (on bolt guns). You have to be careful and use plenty of release agent (paste wax) just like with regular bedding kits. There is no reason that I can think of that you couldn't use the epoxy sticks (the 2 part modeling clay looking things). You wouldn't have to worry about it running into places you didn't want it to go.
I've had great results just using the o-ring on the lug trick...good enough that I've never had to move up to bedding a fore end.

Ahhh KISS  my favorite.  I have some rubber washers between the stock and the lug, and still only pulled it down to ~2 MOA.  I seen the RTV bedding in the FAQ's but I didn't know how well it would work a synthetic stock, or if there is any different steps I need to do.  2 MOA might be good for most people for most things, but I would at least like to cut that in half if not more.

Thanks Guys

Am I missing someithing?  How do you bed a Handi from the LUG back?  I assume you are talking about the forend hanger.  If that is the case, I can tell you that I have done it with RTV from there back to the recieiver along with a little at the front of the forend to exert a little upward pressure and it seemed to help with my CR back when it was a 45 CR.  It all depends on the particular Handi - they vary alot.  And as noted above - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.  There are a lot variables that make these guns shoot either well or badly and you can degrade performance if you are not careful.  Fred (the wildcatter) did have some suggestions for actually bedding the barrel lug a in a couple of spots that would not interfere with opening and clossing the action.  Have not tried that.  As far as glass bedding goes, I find that a little STP works great as a release agent.  Have had some bad experiences with the paste wax approach from time to time.

Yes I'm talking about the forend hanger, I call it a lug, but ya.  It opened the forend up and floated it and I get some hornady 55grn SP's to shoot and see where that goes.

thanks guys

RTV and even 'household silicone sealant' will stick to plastic; just clean it off good with your next batch of clean dish washing solution. If you wanted to use a 'solvent' like laquer thinner or acetone be forewarned it possibly will etch the plastic, not bad on the inside, but just try to keep it there! (Oh, how would I know?).
The nice thing about it is that with only a little effort it will peel off and you can return to original or change your approach.
