Savage.  If not, then a Remington.

I would say any bolt gun with a wood stock.  Larry

Maybe you will get lucky like I did with a used M700ADL, shoots almost as good as a couple of my upper end M700's I bought new. Bought it at a pawn shop.

I love my 110.  the stock looks like it was finished in the shoe polish we used to get ready for church when we were kids, its kinda heavy, the bolt is herky jerky, the trigger guard is plastic, but the sporter barrel is long and strong and the gun will shoot its ass off.  pretty good trigger too.
Though taken from established manufacturers' sources and presumed to be safe please do not use any load that I have posted. Please reference Hogdon, Lyman, Speer and others as a source of data for your own use.

I would go with the Savage 110. Great shooting rifle. I have owned a few and never had one that wasn't a good shooter.

Back aways, one of my boys had a Rem 788 that shot very well.

Trigger was bad, but if you could hold it steady it would shoot great groups.  He took his first deer with that rifle.

Keep em coming!

Ive bought 3 mossberg atrs now. 2 of them 243s for the grandkids and one 06 for myself that i ended up giving to a buddys daughter. All were a bit rough around the edges but for the money what do you expect. Surprised me though that all three of those 250 dollar guns were moa shooters.

Sat. at the Lima gun show I picked up an H&R Handy rifle with a cheapo scope and a box of factory ammo for $ 200. It also came with a sling, hammer spur and ammo holder. Looks like new and had trigger work done on it. I haven`t shot it yet but may get to that today. I`ll let you know how it shoots.

The only reason that I didn't mention the Handi on my list is because you might get a good one, you might not.  But the two Handi .243's my family own are both good shooters (1.5moa).

jmayton, Is that with factory ammo? I owned one in 223 that would shoot sub moa with my hand loads and have had others tell me they were also getting alittle better than moa accuracy. I will probly sell this one to a cousin of mine that told me he wanted a rifle that would kill groundhog farther than a 22 rimfire. I was going to sell him one of my .204`s, but he has alot of coyotes around him and this gun will do alot better job on them and it`s alot cheaper, and he is cheap! Almost as cheap as I am.  ;)

I agree on the Savage being an excellent shooter, all I have owned have been very accurate.  The Rem. 788's are getting out of your price range around my part of the country.  Another that has been around under the names of Smith & Wesson 1500, Mossberg 1500, Howa and Weatherby Vanguard.  All very good shooters and the same basic rifle with just a few minor differences.  DP

looks like my 110 has some competition now. I just brought home a used Howa with the OD Hogue stock and a nikko sterling "nighteater" scope.  what ever the hell that is.  Rifle feels damn nice, decent trigger too.  can't wait to shoot it thursday.  the dude I bought it from is a police sarge and he said it was a tackdriver but too much LOP for his very small wife, and they only put 28 rounds through it.

just made up some rounds for it tonight, will see how she performs in the shootout against the 110.

I know some people hate those Hogue stocks but I love em.    ;D

I read some reviews that those scopes are crap. we shall see.

I shot the H&R the other day. With 70 gr. varmint bullets it was abt. 1 moa. I would call it a 250 yrd. groundhog gun. Not real great, but for the price it shines.

Marlin or savage would be in the price range. I would check your local pawn shops and gun shows, I snagged a nice winchester westerner for $240 out the door. The blueing was a little worn but she shoots good.

Country boy,

If you are looking for a used .243 you might find a good deal on a used rifle in 6mm Remington. I know they are a little more powerfull, but there is no difference in recoil as far as my wifes 110 in .243 and my 700 Remington in 6mm. Both of these rifles can shoot an inch or less from a bench rest with the inexpensive green and yellow Remington ammo.

At t his point and time I would steer clear of the Marlin anything. At least new unless you find one Pre Remlin.

The Savage or if you can find one the Stevens would be a good bargain.

The scope, unless your extremely lucky, is crap Made for a company called Nikko Sterling their budget optics used to be good but that was back in the 1970's and earlier since then they have steadily gone down hill. last one I brought a 4.5-14x50 Gold Crown had an occular housing you could wiggle up and down and side to side and doing so whilst looking through it the reticle would dance about. The importer claims it's normal and all fast focuss occulars do this.............................. Bull!

I can only hope yours is better as the Nighteater was not a cheap scope here in the UK. have had others tell me i am wrong but the last two Nikko Sterling scopes I brought have had the same problem and have been dispossed of. No more new of newish ones for me.
