Talk me out of a 25-06
« on: February 04, 2011, 12:50:13 AM »
Well as the deer season is over cabin fever is setting in and thoughts of new calibers start to go through my head. I just sent a receiver in for one of the found 7.62x39 barrels and am now thinking I should also get a 25-06.  I really want a 257 roberts but the funds are not there for a bolt gun in that caliber. I have a .243 , 7mm-08 and 270 so was thinking the 25 would fit between there somewhere. Would this caliber really outperform the others I have? Primary purpose they are used for is deer in pa where shots are usually under 100 yards. I quess you could say I dont need it but i think I want it.

You already have 4 deer rifles.  Consider the .45-70.

What kind of results are you looking for that the .270 or .243 won't give you?  Really?
If you just 'want' another round, then by all means, go for it, the .25-06 is a good round.  Where it shines, though, is at ranges way beyond 100 yards.
If you want a .257 Roberts, check at Midway for an A&B barrel, and find a decent M98, put the two together, stock it, and enjoy!  In just the last few days, an older M77 Ruger showed up in a used gun rack, at $350 asking price, and a friend tells me of one in Michigan, a 722 Remington for about the same money, well within the means of a modest "playtoy" savings account.
In the same range, as far as cash outlay, rebore that .243, or pick up a Hornet barrel and do it.
I told my pap and mam I was going to be a mountain man; acted like they was gut-shot. "Make your life go here, son. Here's where the people is. Them mountains is for Indians and wild men." "Mother Gue", I says "the Rocky Mountains is the marrow of the world," and by God, I was right. Keep your nose in the wind and your eye along the skyline

DH#1,

One of the rules of Handism is your are NOT allowed to talk anyone out of buying a new gun or barrel.  In fact we are required to promote the acquistion.  Please buy the 25-06 and post range pics!

OK I'll try to talk you out of it!

You already have some pretty good calibers that can be used for varmints, predators and deer so what you really need is a pistol caliber carbine or rifle like a .357 mag, or a .44 or 45 LC and you can reload them to suit your needs.

A 45-70 is probably a must have also!

Covering all the calibers works well, and you can fill in the in-betweens later as needed!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

The only reason I won't buy a new 25-06, they now have extractors.  I do like thos longer barrels.

This is what i do in your situation. Just say to yourself: I don't need another gun, I don't need another gun, I don't need another gun. I want another gun, I want another gun, I want another gun, Convince the wife i need another gun, Convince the wife i need another gun, I bought another gun, I bought another gun. I'm not just a Handi-aholic, I am a gun-aholic. Bought a savage 17 HMR in nov. , then a Rem 700 SPS 30.06 off my son and now i ordered parts to build another ar-15. I don't know whats wrong with me???

You obviously like those 'mid'calibers', and the 25-06 will equal the fine .257Bob if you load it down. I think you are well covered in that range, what you need is a big bore  ;)!
Now, let me tell you about my new 45-70 UH........... ;D.

25/06 is a great caliber, but you are heavy on the light end. Some have said 45/70, to which I strongly suggest you look at the 444 also. They are real hunting calibers, capable of taking any North American game out to 250yards. That is where you "need" something in your arsenal.

Well no 25-06 will be joining the safe collection as of yet. I think I have enough deer rifles and will get the 45-70 next. For now that is or until maybe some new calibers are added. Man I hate having to make choices. Maybe when I hit the lottery I will just get one of each handi and I wont have this problem. Thanks for all the assistance.

Have one I am working on to keep it from popping open after the shot.  Tell you what though, it puts holes close together when mounted on a Harris bipod.  Hope to have the problem fixed soon.  What about the 30-35 cal range??  So many calibers and so little time... Don't mean to discourage your purchase, though.

The .270 and the .25-06(as you probably know) are both necked down versions of the venerable .30-06. The former utilizes a .277" diameter bullet while the latter has a .257" bullet. That is only 0.020" difference. Personally, I would not get the .25-06 if it was my decision since the .25-06 won't give you anything that the existing .270 will do.

My recommendation is to second Jimbo47's suggestion on a .357 barrel and get one of the new Talo Trapper. Wish I could find the picture that was previously posted of someone's Handi that had such a shortened carbine with a red dot type of sight. It would be a very nice 'brush' rifle for boar & buck busting. You could always get in the .357 Maximum reamer rotation to deepen the chamber for some extra power if you felt the need for more power out of it.

My 2¢,

ETA :> found the post I was looking for and you've got to admit that this is one sweet setup! Kudos to dave29!  :)

I put a little red dot on it that I had laying around, I can't decide if I want a small optic like this or the Nikon 2-7 that I picked up the other day. Decisions, decisions.....  :D

I'm also going back and forth between this stock set and an extra Handi-Grip that I have laying around.
