Coni size for skunks.
« on: February 03, 2011, 09:53:57 AM »
Next year I would like to target some of the skunks around here with conibears.  Most all of my trapping has been with footholds.  What would some of you experienced skunk trappers suggest for size of trap that would dispatch a skunk without losing the essance?  I'm thinking maybe a 120 or a 155.  Any input?
Thanks,
Trapper Jack

I use the 160 with good results, sometimes you get a skunk that leaks abit...lol... it relaxes and you get some  smell but not like as if it sprayed.  My trigger is on top and  in a t shape.

Thanks RdFx
Like I said, I have next to no experienc with conibears and we seem to be getting a lot of skunks.  I want to save the essance as it seems to be worth more than the hides.
Thanks,

I have caught skunks in 110s also BUT most have been alive.  Now i have used 120s in an experiment  in mink size boxes for coon and they are dead on arrival but you dont get alot of  committments  with small size opening, skunks or coon.  Use the 160s.  Like with rat trapping in runs , use 160s, just use one spring , keep other one with saftey on..... for rats..

I'm no expert but have caught several this yr. in 220 coon buckets, trigger on bottom in the shape of an "M". Most of the time very little smell, but sometimes...................................................................

My experience with skunks is somewhat limited(and I like that point).
I have caged several, and by sweet talking them and moving slowly--they  haven,t sprayed.
Most others I have gotten in my water sets--nothing beats a nosey skunk at the bottom of a slidewire.
I have had them in 110s and 220s,but I think the mid sized 160s would be better--have had them live in 220s.
Tony,I think you got something there with the 155s--more neck catches and less --hitting them further on the back.
You guys feel free to experiment-- I will try to stay with the sweet smelling water rodents.
