Turkey barrel for shotgun?
« on: February 02, 2011, 04:10:02 AM »
I have a pardner combo-slug gun/50 cal muzzy. I am looking at purchasing a turkey barrel for my gun. I have two questions: which of the 12ga barrels would be better and 2. Should I consider the 20 ga barrel and have the gun for my 10 year old to use as well? Would this gun with the 20 ga barrel be too much for him? Any advice on the turkey barrels would be greatly appreciated

A 20 gauge is fine for turkeys plus your son "might" be able to shoot it. All kids are different. My 8 year old son has a .410 and he doesn't like shooting it because of the recoil. My friend has a boy the same age and he got his first turkey last spring with a 20 gauge.

If you want maximum range get a 12. Me personally I'd rather have the challenge of calling them in closer.

Get the 20ga for the above mentioned reasons. I have a Mossy 835 12ga and the the turkey choke set up I have I could easily take a turkey at 50 Yards. I started using a 20ga last spring and had no problem taking a tom at 36 paces. I generally put my decoy about 15-20 paces out. Nothing better than that heart pounding rush of getting them in close.
308 win                 45-70                       12ga
30-30                    223 stainless steel   20ga TDC
44 mag                  Tracker II 20ga        20ga
45-70 Manlicher     20ga USH                28ga
                                                              410ga

My favorite turkey barrel is my partner  mod choke 12ga. Mine patterns better at 40yds than my Winchester 1300 turkey gun does, but up to 35yds that xfull winchoke is very tight.  I'd get the 20 if your boy seems interested. You could start him with some trap loads and work up.
