I usually don't post here, or read much on this board. I have a question about using military type ammunition on varmints and predators. First, I am fully aware of the dangers involved with FMJ ammo reguarding ricoceht, so no lectures there, please. I live and hunt in vry mountainous areas, and there is always a suitable backstop, or I will have to pass on the shot. The question is, will 8x 57 ball cleanly kill Coyotes? I have a sporterized Mauser that shoots 1 1/2" groups with peep sights, and cheap surplus ball ammo. I plan to scope it soon. I can get 125 grain Hornady bullets, but the 8x57 is really a heavy bullet gun. It has a 1/ 9& 1/4" twist. the cheap ball it likes so well is 196 grain, at about 2550 fps. I can load 200 grain match Kings and 200 grain Nosler partitions (and Ballistic tips) to almost 2700fps.
The whole reason for this is to have one rifle, one load, one everything, so I can use the rifle for everything. I can buy the cheap Milsurp ammo for just over $200 for 1000 rounds. It will make a great Poop hits the fan gun. It will put deer
(or moose, for that matter) on the table. It will be great if i ever have to defend my life or my property in a time of violnt insurection, civil unrest. I really need to know, before I cripple anything, will ball ammo reliably anchor Coyotes? I really hate to shoot anything and not kill it DEAD Right There? Anybody have any experience with FmJ on Predators?
