Snap Button Protectors
« on: January 30, 2011, 07:32:13 PM »
I've several leather holsters that have the metal backshell of the snap button threathening to marr the gun finish. In fact all the low end leather I have is that way. I seen a Bianchi inside trouser holster thet had a vinyl  snap plug on the backshell of the thumb break snap button that protects the handgun. Its a simple affair having a post that slips thru the existing hole that all snap buttons have and only needs to hit that post w/a soldering iron and it stays put. HOWEVER ~ chkg w/leather shops, local and online they're not available. In fact from the blank looks on their faces, it was apparent none even had considered it to be a problem ~ I borrowed the Bianchi holster to show what I needed  I know, I know one could (w/some difficulty) sow a leather cover over it but that seems a lil' beyond the pale for a holster already finished.

I'm not really looking for 'Why doncha try ~ ~ ~'  type work arounds. I'm seeking for possible source for the vinyl snap plug/cover I tried to describe. I'd like to hear from someone that has done/used them and where they may be obtained. I must have a dozen or so old holsters w/bare steel facing the handgun that irks me to think how something so simple to prevent finish damage could have been overlooked for sake of profit ~ it'll be awhile before I can afford to replace them all w/new Bianchi leather ~ rather recover what I have on hand.

No help?

Ok, executed plan B (reason I didn't didn't encourage work arounds as I had one). It involved a 5/8" nylon plug from Lowe's. Nipped the skirting off, mixed a tab of 4 min JB Weld, denatured the hw and slapped it on. (yawn . . . scratch, scratch)

Get a little piece of soft garment leather. I line the holsters I make with horsehide and use a scrap of that. Also do the same thing on knife sheaths. Cut a circle and glue it over the snap base using Barge's cement. Barge's is tough enough that it is used to replace crepe soles on boots and shoes and holds with no stitching so it will hold the circle just fine.
